Summary
Maomao wanted nothing more in her life than to spend it playing with poisons, finding all their limits and uses. When Lakan brought her home that didn't change, but the access she had did, and with time that turned to experimenting on others, and a ruthlessness and sadistic joy that developed with her perfecting poisons.
Zui wanted nothing more in his life that to be allowed humanity, something not afford to the first born of the Emperor. He hoped that Jinshi could shield him, or that his uncle Kyu could take his place, but as conspiracies piled up as the rear palace only grew he only found himself growing more and more willing with extremes.
Neither wanted this marriage, it was the requirement to continue as they were while also saving the nation. They both knew a plot was brewing and that the rear palace was its fuel, falling was never the point, never even a consideration but somewhere along the way they had each seen passed all the masks and finery.

Summary
Near the end of her pregnancy Concubine Gyokuyou is attacked in the middle of the night. Maomao steps in to defend her and while fighting for her life ends up taking the life of the attacker while sustaining serious injuries.
While Jinshi steps in to care for her physically, Maomao deals with the mental turmoil of taking a life.
With Maomao vulnerable and Jinshi doing his best to be patient with her, something begins to bloom between them.

Summary
