He’s walking up the steps with Becca’s hand clasped tight in his. She’s wearing her favorite nice dress – it’s her only nice dress, after all this rationing – and her hair is pulled back into two braids that Bucky did for her this morning. Already there are wisps coming loose at the nape of her neck. Bucky lets go of her hand, but only long enough to smooth down those flyaways as they pass through the carved doors of the synagogue.

He used to go to services. With his family. Saturday morning Shabbat services, and Havdalah if they had the time. Rosh Hashanah in the autumn and fasting for Yom Kippur. Lighting candles for Hanukkah and playing with little hand-carved dreidels, making them spin and spin as Becca clapped her little baby hands in delight. It’s – he’s – it’s been a long time since he’s thought about this. Longer still since he’s gone to a service.
