A one-shot connected to my previous fic but can be read as a stand-alone as this takes place before Noe and Vanitas are together.
In which Vanitas' 'Death' resulted in him becoming a vampire, the more he used the book of Vanitas the less human he became.
Vanitas finds he isn't compatible with anyone he tried to drink from apart from Noe.
They both hold lingering and confusing feelings about one another and in this fic, basically, Vanitas does his monthly blood drinking session with a side of dubiously questionable ways of looking at romance, on if love borders on Love or Obsession, and so he decides to keep his distance from Noe. Sanji tries to imagine Yonji carrying anything for him at all just to be nice. The daydream falls apart instantly, because Yonji only ever took things from Sanji to break them.
“Do you promise you’ll give it back?” he musters the courage to ask, clinging to the cookbook a kind old woman just sold him, unwilling to let it go without making sure. She had smiled and said she was certain her family’s recipes would be in good hands with him and Sanji doesn’t want to prove her wrong before he gets a chance to even try. “You have to promise.”
Zoro gazes down at him with that inscrutable look on his face he’s worn all day. He could probably take the book from Sanji pretty easily but he doesn’t yank it away or twist his wrist until he lets go. They just stand there, sizing each other up. Sanji’s nerves mount with every second but he doesn’t back down.
Yonji would have hurt him already and laughed about it. The first mate of the Strawhat crew simply says, after enough time that Sanji knows he’s taken it seriously, “Promise.”

Sanji tilts his head back so that it rests against the dirty wall behind him. He’s still upright, somehow, through sheer stubbornness or spite. He doesn’t look like someone who only has tonight left to live.
In fact, he looks sharp. There’s no better word for it. His expression is still as peaceable as it has been since he arrived, but watching him is like watching a knife slide out of its sheath. He is, abruptly, dangerous. A tool made for cutting.
“If you knew where I’ve been, you would be terrified of me,” he says.

(The bars give way. Straw Hat moves before Sanji can do more than sway in his direction. He steps into the dingy cell and reaches up for his cook with both hands, familiar and proprietary. Sanji allows his chin to be turned, his hair pushed back so that the grisly bruises on his face are exposed.
Straw Hat’s eyes are black with anger. This, you think, is the boy who started a war for his brother. This, you realize, is why Sanji was unafraid.
“I’m fine,” he says.
“Of course you are,” Straw Hat snaps. “You’re mine, you’re the best. Of course you’re fine. Zoro, get these off him.”)

It wasn’t something she had a lot of reasons to consider growing up, being that the only other child her age in Cocoyasi Village was her sister, and although Nojiko would occasionally sneak a romance novel to read into late hours of the night while Bell-mère pretended not to notice, Nami herself was far more interested in books on cartography. And then Arlong happened, and she had neither time nor energy to waste on soul-searching when she could pour it into money-making instead. You run, you steal, you haul your winnings back to your mother’s grave; if you have enough left in you by the end of the day to crawl into whichever bed you’re sleeping in this month, it’s a better day than most.
