Summary

Summary
Hua Cheng and Xie Lian navigate trauma recovery while still in a cult.

“We will file a divorce for you,” another elder tells her. “But you must remarry immediately.”
Hua Cheng looks at Xie Lian. Her expression is one of despair. “Who would marry me now?” she laughs. There’s no humor in it. Her laugh turns into a hacking cough, then subsides after a moment.
“I’ll do it,” Hua Cheng says suddenly.
Every head in the room turns to him.

Summary
Xie Lian, cursed to be the target of any rape that happens around him, has what is unfortunately a fairly normal day for him. Hua Cheng finds him afterwards.

Stunned, he drops his bag of scraps. The flower in his hand flutters to the ground. He watches it fall, and resigns himself to what comes next.
He knows not to fight, by now. The curse on him is vindictive. He fought, at first. And then he learned about the people whose suffering replaced his own.
He fixes the image of the woman he’d found, broken and lifeless, all those centuries ago, in his mind’s eye, and forces his muscles to relax.

Summary
Xie Lian’s husband, Jun Wu, drugs and rapes him. He flees to the house of Jun Wu’s business rival, Hua Cheng, and slowly begins to heal from everything he went through in his arranged marriage.

“Come here, gege,” Hua Cheng says, reaching for him.
Xie Lian climbs into his lap and muffles his sobs in Hua Cheng’s neck. His arms find their way around Hua Cheng’s waist, clinging to the only thing anchoring him to reality in a storm of pain and betrayal.
“You’re safe now,” Hua Cheng whispers, stroking his back. “You’ll be okay. I won’t let him touch you ever again.”
