Summary
Gustave Aubert and Verso Dessendre have spent fourteen years perfecting the art of hating each other. Rivals since college, they cordially despise one another's existence—until they get trapped overnight in a freezing train car and are forced to share body heat, secrets, and a bottle of whiskey.

When that dream version of Verso walks into their workshop wearing his face and offering him coffee, Gustave realizes he's made a terrible mistake. The entity wants to be real. “Your friend hates me,” Gustave blurts out before he can talk himself out of it. “I— I don’t care if he doesn’t like me,” (Gustave does care), “but if it affects— it might become a problem. So, if I insulted him somehow or—”
“You’re imagining this,” he expects to hear. Or, maybe — “Stop whining, you can’t be liked by everyone.”
Instead of that, Verso rolls his eyes and makes an annoyed noise — half a sigh, half a growl.
“You didn’t insult anyone,” says. Looks at Monoco.
Gustave glances there too and discovers that the gestral’s mask is turned towards them — the painted eyes staring, it seems, right into his soul.
…He is starting to regret bringing this up.

The Nevron shrieks, losing its gracefulness for a moment. Verso smiles, triumphant; jumps sideways to avoid a spell. There’s the approaching stomping of another Nevron, probably a Stalact again; Verso laughs and opens his mouth to boast, to taunt Monoco, to brag about the first hit being his—
The Stalact runs past the dancing Nevron, not even trying to hit it, and collides with Verso full-speed.
It hurts.
Or: Verso and Monoco encounter the Ballet for the first time. It doesn't go as planned.
