Summary
Eddie grabs Christopher’s backpack and gets the orange out of his lunchbox. “You want some of this?” He holds it out in Buck’s direction. “It’s been just as long since breakfast for you.”
It has been a while since they last ate, and the adrenaline of the day is starting to wear off into the kind of hunger where Buck thinks he could single-handedly eat a large pizza without breaking a sweat, but…
Every time someone offers him an orange, he thinks about this silly superstition from a book he picked up back in his wandering days:
“If a boy gives a girl an orange, her love for him will multiply.”
Or, Buck spends years doing anything he can to avoid taking oranges from Eddie (and falls in love anyway).

“On that topic, uh, since we’re all here,” Eddie said, clearing his throat awkwardly and gripping the stem of his wine too tightly, “Buck and I have something to tell you all. We … well … uh …”
“We’re getting married!” Buck said, cutting Eddie off.
Every jaw at the table dropped. Maddie choked on her wine.
“For insurance purposes!” Eddie said, putting up a hand to hold back the tide of questions they were about to be hit with. He turned to Buck and glared. “I told you we had to open with the insurance.”
Buck shrugged apologetically. “I got excited.”

Amnesia. These guys were going with amnesia. Buck wasn’t sure what the angle was; maybe brainwash him into believing he knew these people and trusted them enough to start spilling secrets? Fat chance.
“We’re not trying to trick you,” the man, apparently named Bobby, said with a sigh. “You’re Evan Buckley, and you’re a firefighter in LA. I’m your captain. You got knocked out by a collapsing roof at a structure fire, and now you have amnesia.”
“Where’s Eddie?” That was the only thing he’d asked or said since they’d started their little amnesia charade thirty minutes ago.

In which retired spy Buck wakes up in an unfamiliar hospital room with no memories of the last four years of his life and the only person he trusts is his old partner, Eddie Diaz.

Summary
Buck asks, "Where is your dad?"
"He's downstairs buying sodas," Christopher replies. He sits down next to Buck and points at the magazine. "Why are you reading Bridal Guide?"
"Oh." Buck flushes a little. It's not like he can explain: I realized I'm in love with your dad and keep accidentally planning a wedding we're never going to have. "It was this or Golf Digest."

Summary
The guy gets straight to the point, asking, "What do you need?" in a dull, bored voice.
"My best friend is going to die. I want that to… not happen."
"No small feat, bringing back the dead. And it comes at a cost."
It's Eddie. Buck says, "Yes," without a second thought.

Summary
Buck stares at it until the letters begin to blur together, then slowly presses backspace. One word disappears. Then another. And another, until the text box is empty again.
Of course Eddie isn't home.
There won't be another evening spent stretched out on Eddie's couch, the documentary playing forgotten in the background because Buck keeps pausing every five minutes to add another fact he read somewhere online. Eddie would roll his eyes with practiced exasperation, muttering, "You know the narrator was about to tell us that, right?" while Christopher laughed from the other end of the couch, insisting Buck should just narrate the whole thing himself.
Those nights are over.
Home isn't Los Angeles anymore.
or: after eddie follows christopher to el paso, both he and buck convince themselves they're doing the right thing, even as they're falling apart without each other. it takes a drunken midnight phone call and a few long-overdue realizations for the diaz family to find their way back home.

Summary
Soulmates. Everyone is taught about them in school. It’s necessary to explain the random words or symbols on their child's bodies when they begin to realize other kids have different ones.
It's the first words that your soulmate says to you personally. Once you hear them the lettering wherever on your body freezes for a moment. The words then become darker almost like a fresh tattoo that forever remains boldened.
Buck had the fortune of being able to meet his soulmate. Unfortunately, his last words were the first and last Buck would ever hear from him.
But that was years ago and Buck has had countless meaningless encounters since then to fill the void of losing his true love. Although he loved serving overseas he couldn’t stomach it anymore after his last mission ended in his soulmate's death.
His new job at the 118 firehouse is perfect. Except for the new guy whose eyes make Buck feel heartbroken in an indescribable way.
Or Buck believes he lost his soulmate while in the SEALs. In reality he hadn’t and Eddie, new to the 118 doesn’t understand the hatred his coworker has for him. It takes a bit for them to figure out this isn’t the first time their paths have crossed.

Summary
“What are we doing, Buck?” And Eddie’s whispering. Becomes aware suddenly that that’s all they’ve really been doing.
And Buck doesn’t say anything, doesn’t even move, or try to. It should snap him out of it, but it doesn’t, he just swallows, eyes on Eddie and Eddie feels his chest start getting warmer. When they’re out of this, when they’re two people and not touching, not connected in anyway, Eddie will tell himself the heat was from Buck, not from him, not radiating from within, but external.
“Why aren’t you doing this with Tommy?” he asks instead.
Buck breathes in, low and slow, his chest expanding with it and Eddie can feel it against his own, the way it pushes back at him on his own exhale, like they’ve figured out how to fit together without any of their jagged edges cutting into each other. “Tommy’s not here,”
Eddie’s hand tightens around his thigh, the one wrapped over Eddie’s shoulder, “No,” he agrees, and that seems to not be the issue, not in the slightest. Not in Eddie’s mind, at least. “He’s not.”

Summary
“She said she wasn’t worried about us breaking up.”
Oh. Well. That was pretty definitively a thing that people said about partners who were together romantically.
“Say something,” Buck instructed.
“What?”
“Anything,” Buck said, his voice wavering on the word. Which was—it was weird, right? Why was Buck so shaken by a throwaway comment?
Or maybe the better question was why wasn’t Eddie? If either of them was going to get freaked out by the assumption that he was dating a man, it would make more sense for it to be Eddie, who was straight, and not Buck, who had, in fact, already dated men.
“Aren’t you going to be late for your shift?”

No. Whatever it is, no. Eddie would like Buck to stop chasing whatever that thing is. Would like to grab the thought out of Buck’s concussed head and throw it out a window.
Buck’s face drops into something serious, eyes wide. “You called me baby.”
There it is. Out the window it did not go.
“No, I didn’t,” Eddie says.
Very smooth. Convincing.
“You did.” Buck points at him, floppy and triumphant. “At the— the thing. With the— you said it. You called me baby.”
“I didn’t say that.”
“Eddie.” Buck is delighted. “I heard you. I was concussed, not deaf.”
“I didn’t call you baby,” Eddie scoffs. “I called you a baby. Because you got a bump on the head and were crying about it.”
“That’s not—” Buck starts.
“You were being a baby,” Eddie continues, standing now, because a moving target is harder to hit. “I’m gonna go tell the others you’re awake.”
“Eddie.”
“Rest your head, bud.”

Summary
“Can we call someone for you?” the man asked. “A friend, a spouse?”
Buck thought of Eddie. Hen. Chimney. Bobby. He thought of them all out to dinner together at this very moment while he bled in an alley. He thought of the silence, the coldness, the looks he’d been getting from them since getting back to work.
He wouldn't have hesitated for a second to call Eddie just a few months ago.
He swallowed hard, looking back up. “No. There’s no one to call. Thanks.”
“Are you sure? You’re bleeding,” the woman pointed at her own lip, as if Buck was unaware he was bleeding from his.
“Yeah. I’m sure.”
OR: Buck is on the outs with his team after dropping the lawsuit and coming back to work. A night out with a couple guys from B-shift changes everything.

Summary
He’s never seen Eddie like this before. The tension that has seemed permanent in his body these past few weeks, has completely left his shoulders. The pinched look in his eyes is gone. Over Eddie’s shoulders, Hen and Chim have come to investigate the ruckus, and they both appear just as shocked.
“What’s wrong?” Buck asks, wondering if he’s forgotten some terrible dog allergy from someone in the 118 family. He doesn’t think he has.
Suddenly, Chim turns and shouts, “Cap! Did you know that Peggy’s a dog!?”
Or, Buck gets a dog, the firefam are concerned about his new "girlfriend", and Eddie is definetly NOT losing his mind.

Summary
Without waiting for a reaction or reply, the man bore down on the gas and peeled down the highway, leaving Buck stranded in the middle of nowhere somewhere along Interstate 10.
And as Buck watched the red brake lights of his Jeep disappear into the distance, clutching his prescription of blood thinners tightly to his chest... there was really only one thing left to do. Tilting his head back until he was staring at the stars, he took a deep breath and screamed into the night:
“Fuck!”
And much like every other one of his recent cries for help, it had gone unanswered.
---
Buck gets carjacked, held at gunpoint, and stranded in Arizona the day before his first shift post-lawsuit. And that's only the beginning of his troubles.

“...My husband here is always talking about coming to this restaurant.” Buck tells the waiter, holding his breath while waiting for Eddie’s response.
Eddie blushes immediately, “Yeah, I just love the food…” he says, nodding. Buck’s heart skips. He thinks Eddie will leave it at that, but he adds to the lie, “See, we’re celebrating our wedding anniversary tonight.”
(Or, Buck and Eddie keep referring to each other as husbands, it’s undoubtedly nice… They’re not together, no. It’s a best friend thing.)

There’s weight across him, an arm draped loosely but firmly over his torso, the faint, steady rhythm of someone else’s breathing brushing against his skin.
Skin against skin. No barrier, no layers, nothing between them except heat and contact.
Why is Eddie...
Oh my god.
Or
Buck wakes up hungover in a hotel room after Chim’s bachelor party, realizes he and Eddie had a very real hookup… and immediately spirals into panic because now he’s convinced Eddie was just drunk and he’s single-handedly ruined their entire relationship.
