Simon did not like this plan, thank you very much. He was privy to Grace’s “practice sessions” on piloting Mary and he nearly threw up, and not because of the lingering effects of radiation sickness. And now here he was, sitting in the pilot’s chair maintaining a level angle as Grace went outside the fucking ship to reel in the collection device. Rocky’s running commentary was not in any way reassuring.

Summary
Grace's webbed hands press against the glass, his curious chitters surprising the young man standing next to the viewport he was observing from. He’s newer on the team, Grace jogs his memory for his name again.
The young man holds his hand to his chest, breathing a sigh of relief, “Oh hey, Grace. Come to see your new neighbor?”
He nods, chirping his burning question, “Who is it?”
“Dunno,” Chris, right, that’s his name– “It’s another mer.”
(Or, Rocky and Adrian are helped by a merman named Grace, and in turn they save him. Now happily living in the Erid Marine Rehabilitation & Research Center, Grace is surprised when another injured merman named Simon is brought to recover in a neighboring tank. Perhaps, these two lost souls may finally have a home, together.)

He's even managed to develop a friendship with him- Simon is a great study buddy to have, so smart and organized. “I called it the Good Luck quilt,” Grace says. “It’s all symbols of luck from across the world, it was a parting gift before the mission - but let’s not get into all that. It’s silly but it’s comforted me through some pretty hard times. I thought…I don’t know. I’m probably just being sentimental.”
Simon grasps the edge of the quilt that he can reach, if only to make sure it’s real. It’s beautiful. There’s not a lot of color left in the world, and colorful, soft fabric of this quality is worth a fortune. The patterns are joyful, almost childish. For some reason that Simon can’t quite articulate through the sickness and exhaustion, it makes him suddenly very certain that this isn’t the COI.
In Simon’s old universe, fabric, thread, and yarn are all precious commodities. He's had to learn to mend clothes and knit socks out of practicality. On Erid, it's a way to pay back what he owes, to make friends, and eventually, to heal.
