"Why do they hate each other so much?" Pidge broke the awkward silence that was caused by yet another argument between the red and blue paladins.
It had been an early rise for them, one with alarms going off as they rushed to get to their Lions to fight off yet another raid. It could be the lack of sleep getting to them, but it felt different. Lance looked genuinely hurt when Keith snapped at him this morning over their gooey breakfast, and that hurt quickly came out as venom.
"I don't know what happened to them." Shiro said, almost mournful.
"What do you mean?" Hunk asked. "They've always been at each other's throats."
"No?" Shiro replied, looking surprised. "No, they used to be best friends."
Or: Keith and Lance used to date before Voltron, and everyone is confused about their rivalry.

Summary
Lance laughs. That nose scrunched, dimples on full display, mouth open kind of laugh that Keith rarely sees but very much appreciates.
“It's like- what if the next date I go on is just as terrible?”
A dangerous thought forms in Keith's mind. They lock eyes again. Keith isn't a mind reader, nor has he ever claimed to be, but at this moment he seems to be able to see straight into Lance’s head.
“I could..,” Keith stumbles over his words. “I could go on a date with you.” He scans Lance’s face for any sign of abject horror. “As practice! Obviously.”
