Summary
“It is Kryn spellcraft. Evil stuff, I’m afraid,” Ikithon tells Bren’s parents, dripping with sympathy. “One of them must have bound your son’s soul to theirs. Injuries and other ailments are transmitted through the bond. But don’t worry. We know how to take care of cases like his, here at Soltryce.”
*
Exposure to dunamis has unpredictable effects. Two people can become entangled across vast distances in space, their future connection echoing backwards through time. The elite of the Dynasty call this phenomenon the soulmate bond.
Trent Ikithon calls it an excellent strategic opportunity.
(In which Bren thinks he's cursed, Astrid and Wulf think he needs protection, and Essek has never met him, but he knows Bren is in danger.)

Summary
He wonders if he has a life beyond today. He wonders if he has time to erase the chalk plans in his home before abandoning it forever. He wonders if he was the one who looked into the mirror, or the one who stepped out of it.
— Essek and the Nein succeed in defeating the Somnovem, but their return to the Material Plane is a backwards trip out of Aeor. He is haunted by his memories, his guilt, the monsters around every corner, the threat of Trent Ikithon — and a shadow in his periphery that looks remarkably like himself. For Essek Thelyss, love and annihilation go hand-in-hand, until he learns otherwise.

Summary
“You accused me of treating this like a game. I am sorry if I’ve led you to believe that it is only a game—though I won't deny that part of it is.” Bren gives a disarming smile. “My life is either games or murder, after all.”
“Or mail fraud,” Thelyss says dryly, not even a little disarmed.
“The mail fraud is a sort of game as well.”
A sigh. “Is this your way of telling me that you intend to continue playing?”
Bren smiles again, sharper. “If you would let me.”(In which Bren Aldric Ermendrud decides to seduce the Shadowhand and finds that the best way to convince someone to be vulnerable with you is to be vulnerable in turn.)
