    Summary

The day after the Nine-Tails’ attack, Kakashi leaves Konoha. He’s fourteen, he’s alone, and he’s had enough. Shinobi life has done nothing for him, apart from taking everything – everyone – that he holds dear.

So he leaves. He just wants to be alone; people only ever die around him, anyway. He tries his best to never care about anyone again.

Ten years later, Naruto stumbles across a silver-haired half-dead missing-nin in the woods – and he becomes determined to turn this stranger into his first and only friend.

“I need you to go back to Konoha,” he says, “and tell them that I killed Naruto.” At Gai’s shocked expression, he adds quietly, “They’ll believe it. It wouldn’t be the first time I killed a Jinchuuriki.”

Gai reaches out and places a hand on Kakashi’s shoulder, slow and predictable movements. Kakashi nods his head in thanks. “Do you have a story in mind?” Gai asks, also quietly.

“Yeah.” It’s darker than most of Kakashi’s cover stories. In most of his lies, he’s a traveler, a merchant, a journalist, or some other innocuous guy that would reasonably pop up in a civilian village. In his most recent lies, he was an old man, a kid, a dog and an Academy teacher. Not a murderer. “I gained Naruto’s trust over the course of weeks, to the point that he let me hide in his apartment. My goal was to take out Konoha’s most important weapon. A team of shinobi blew my cover this morning, before the time was right. When Naruto came to save me from the shinobi, I killed him and fled.”

“Konoha will never stop hunting you for that,” Gai says. There’s concern in the line between his eyebrows. “Did you think of that?”

“The rest of the story,” Kakashi continues, looking at the floor, “is that Naruto fought back against me and heavily wounded me. Your team found me like that in the woods outside the village. As my friend, you took me here and got Shogo to try and save me, but I died during the surgery.” He gestures non-committally. “Your entire team is covered in my blood, and I’m assuming Shogo didn’t just throw out the organs she cut from me-- If I’m remembering correctly, the protocol for field surgery is to store biohazards in a scroll until they can be disposed of safely, right? You can use that.”

    Summary

Sam manages to break Dean's deal and save him from Hell...at a cost. With no voice, he doesn't know if he can hunt anymore, but he gave his voice up for his brother and he'd do it again. No matter what that means for him.

Fortunately, he's not the only one willing to do whatever it takes to stay by his brother's side.

“Speakin’ of things you do or don’t need to do,” Bobby said, and he almost sounded hesitant. “Ah, hell. What are you two doin’ next? If Sam can talk again, hunting gets a lot safer and easier.”

That wasn’t anything that Sam had considered up to that point. In the end, however, his answer stayed fairly the same. “I go where you go,” he said simply to Dean. Dean blinked, and Sam signed the word for best friend with Dean’s name. In it to the end. And if that meant abandoning a degree, again, and leaving the house they’d found and the jobs they’d taken to go with Dean and hunt, then he’d be packed by the end of the day.

He knew what mattered the most to him, and it wasn’t the school or the house or even his own voice. It was the guy sitting across from him.

“Ryland, you’ve spent more than half of your life in space. What’s it like coming back down to Earth after all that?”

Grace thought for a moment before he said, “Well, the food’s better, for one.” James laughed. “I mean, I had no clue what state Earth would be in, you know? It’s been both surreal to come back and see how things have changed, but also how they’ve stayed the same.”

“You have shattered all known human spaceflight records, Ryland,” James said, again shuffling his cards. A nervous tic, maybe? “And that’s not counting the almost 50 years you’ve spent in space, Rocky. Can you tell me a little bit about what that’s like?”

“I wouldn’t have done it again, except to bring Grace home,” Rocky said. “There is nothing like being on your own planet.”

“I hear ya, buddy,” Grace said, sounding a little choked up. “If everything had gone to plan, and we hadn’t had that Taumoeba leak, I don’t know if I would have made it, really. The trip to Erid was hard, but at least I had another person there to keep me grounded and distracted.” Grace shrugged. “Even then, the nutritional deficiencies were starting to kick in, and I wasn’t sure I was going to make it.”

There’s no audience response at that, just silence.

“It was why I made sure Erid knew that Grace was our top priority,” Rocky said. “Erid was very confused when we arrived. I had to explain a lot of science with very little time, and I am not a scientist.” He paused. “And I had to invent a lot of words for humans that other Eridians didn’t know.”

“There were a lot of misunderstandings, if I remember correctly,” Grace said with a laugh.

“They thought his head was a flaw.”

“Which is the kindest way I’ve been told I’m ugly.”

“Are you guys ok in there??”

Dick jumped, hand flying to his ear. “Tim?”

“Tim?” Jason echoed, seemingly more confused by the second. “We’ve just gotta Tim?”

“Yes, we do have a Tim,” Dick said distractedly, peeking around from the side again to toss the Batarang as Joker took a few steps closer. “Tim, report.”

“No Batman yet,” the voice said, sounding apologetic. “I think we’re still too early to be in range for communication.
