That's what Will had said. He'd meant it, at the time. Now, two years into the life he cobbled together from the broken pieces Hannibal left him in - house, dogs, wife, family - he finds himself haunted by the ghost of a man who looks too much like the reason he still can't sleep through the night. Duncan's friendly, Molly says. Quiet, a little strange, but harmless.
Will isn't so sure about that. She doesn't see the resemblance, but she didn't know Hannibal. Will does a decent job keeping his distance until one day, Duncan Vizla comes home with a dog.

He nods politely and is able to catch Will’s eyes for a precious moment before he turns away to walk back across the street. Les yeux bleu ciel. Blue like overcast ocean skies, blue like deep flame at its base, the hottest part, blue like a slip of an artery under pale skin. He is rooted there, for a moment. A second stretched along time to last an eternity where the buzzing of insects ceases and the breeze freezes a stray curl to stand on its own. The hot humidity of New Orleans’ air a heavy weight in his nostrils. And then it collapses, time set to march once more, and Hannibal forces himself to turn as long dark lashes kiss together and steal the sight from him.
He can hear their distant conversation as he goes and the tone tells him Molly is not pleased with her husband's apparent lack of social skills and tact. He hopes he may be able to hear their arguments at night while sitting on his porch.

Hannibal moves to New Orleans for a change of scenery. Detective Will Graham lives across the street with his wife and step-son. He's already falling apart and, for once, Hannibal might want to hold something gently in his hands.

Summary
Will Graham has never been particularly good at asking for comfort. Fortunately, his tail has never had the same reservations.
Hannibal has grown rather fond of the little omega's unconscious habit of curling his tail around the nearest part of him at crime scenes. He has no intention of bringing attention to something that so clearly soothes Will.
Unfortunately, someone else does.
And Hannibal finds that convincing Will there's nothing shameful about wanting to be close to him may require a gentler approach.

Summary
There are certain rules to follow when working for Baltimore State Hospital for the Criminally Insane. Under no circumstances are you to engage any of the inmates in personal conversation, put yourself in a position where they can cause you serious injury, or let them get inside your head.
Despite Will Graham’s best efforts he has managed to ignore all the rules as the new Orderly at the hospital and found himself the centre of fascination for the worst of the inmates, the Cannibal known as Hannibal Lecter.

Will smiled a humorless smile. “Are you trying to psychoanalyse me Doctor? Are you missing the good old days of psychiatry?”
Hannibal gripped the bars of the cell, fingers tightening like he wanted to prise them apart to be on the same side as Will. “I want to know you, Will. Don’t you want to know me too?”
Will swallowed down the spike of fear at his words. “No. I don’t find you all that interesting.”
Hannibal’s answering smile was all teeth. “You will.”
