Emma squealed—actually squealed, like some Victorian maiden—and scrambled backward, grabbing the sheet and yanking it with her as she tumbled off the bed. Her feet hit the floor hard, and she clutched the fabric to her bare chest, her heart hammering against her ribs.
The sheet came with her.
All of it.
Which meant the man in her bed was now completely, gloriously, horrifyingly naked.

Brendon continues his study of the woman over the rim of his coffee cup, glancing to his sketchbook occasionally as plausible deniability that he’s not fully checking her out.
From the corner of his eye he catches a sun ray of a smile and watches her move to the side of the counter after paying. He tries to focus back in on his sketching. When he looks up again the woman is clutching a mug with some sort of foamy drink, and her golden honey eyes blink around once, twice, then lock on his own blue-grey ones.

“Mhm.” he hummed, not giving her anything else.

Her roommates in college had told her that she was asking for trouble, that her guileless cheer paired with her baby face would tempt evil men everywhere to try and take advantage of her. She’d laughed off their dramatics but always remembered to keep a spare can of mace in her purse for nights out.
It’s not quite trouble, where she finds herself, but it’s not nothing either.
Emma Nolan is a good nurse, a consummate professional, and more than anything, a nice person. Dr. Brendon Park isn't quite sure what to make of her.
