“Now you.” Damen wasn’t going to last much longer. His cheek rested heavy on Laurent’s thigh. “The flowers. Your favorite.”
“Roses, of course. The pale and thorny and allegorical kind.”
Damen snorted. “Try again.”
Laurent smiled again, a slow stretch of muscles still accustoming themselves to the use. “Lilies. There’s a rainbow of them in the gardens at Acquitart. I’ve always enjoyed the yellow ones.”
“Yellow lilies. Good. Now I know what to put in all the rooms when you get yourself killed jumping across a roof.”

Damen steals Nikandros' thunder.
"I’m going to ride home tomorrow and begin preparations to ask for her hand,” Nikandros says, and Laurent smiles wider and says, “Oh, wonderful,” as Damen leaps to his feet with a thundering crash of chair against flagstone.
“Nikandros!” he shouts, papers flying, arms wide, “This— amazing! She sounds amazing! Congratulations!”

Summary
Damen’s grip on his arm is painful. His face in Laurent’s is ashy and sheened with sweat.
He says, “There was something in my drink.”
(Damen is poisoned, Jokaste is framed, Laurent must find them an heir. He's put it off for so long already.)

“Ancel?” said Damen, the name uprooting a sour memory. “The same Ancel who—”
“Yes. Ancel from the gardens,” said Laurent, watching him carefully. Then: “I never apologized to you for that.”
“What?”
“Ancel. The gardens."

Summary
His chest is still heaving, rising and falling as though he’s finished a footrace. The garden and the pet ring he’d weathered stoically, because both had looked so different in decor and atmosphere compared to the first time he’d been here, a court remade. He’d been given a throne instead of the floor at Laurent’s feet. Laurent had tucked a white flower behind his ear, playful and careless of propriety.
The whipping post had been the same.
Damen returns to Arles.
