Summary
Ketterdam was never a good city. Filth and bodies litter the streets, casinos and brothels fight for space in the diseased heart of the Barrel, and a friendly face is as rare a sight as a blue sky. Ketterdam is a lost cause city. But Kaz knows his home, and something has changed.
Wooden dolls wear twisted, stolen smiles; an unending labyrinth hides behind a new door; pits open as dark and suffocating as the Shadow Fold… and two lovers, travelers, monsters walk hand in hand, injured and starving for more than food.
The world enjoys thrusting problems into his arms like abandoned infants, so Kaz is the one left to manage it all.
Or: Annabelle Cane and Jonah Magnus play tug of war with the Bastard of the Barrel and I give Martin a gun.

Summary
Thunder broke over the skies.
Gem picked up her pace, still walking, walking, walking along the pine-shaded road, cobbles still grounded beneath her stepping feet. The wind had not quite risen: the rain had yet to fall. The sky was getting darker. Gem was not heading home.

Summary
Gem woke in her smock, lying stripped on Stygian stone and straw. She was freezing: that was the first thing she noticed. The world seeped in in splashes: she was stripped of her mantle, her hood, her soft gown, and lying on a floor of stone so cold it felt like ice. She couldn't feel her feet. She couldn't move her fingers. There was an awful ache in her bones, her brain, and her mouth tasted like rot and metal.
Fear was very far away from her: she was too tired to grasp it.
In which Gem is not rescued so promptly from Sausage's dungeon.

Summary
Quirrel has read and reread these mysterious letters that found their ways into his possession. Written in a halting script, they make little sense—fogging his mind when he focuses too hard on the details.
The letters are unsigned. He wonders who wrote them.
Perhaps when he arrives in Hallownest, the kingdom's derelict glories will yield answers.

Summary
“Madam, you will be bored.”
Lonely.
Monomon the Teacher only dipped a tentacle into the glowing green wetness, a feeling she’d forever hate, with an unchanging expression. The acid is untarnished, a million words unwritten, an empty slate of potential records and stories and journal submissions and love letters.
“I’ll be living my dreams, dear archivist. One doesn’t require any sustenance or entertainment while she dreams.”
