After a long while, Pep simply said, "I can't."
Leo lowered his eyes to stare at nothing in particular.
When he was younger, he would have asked why. He would have followed Pep into the tunnel, insisting he hadn't given a good enough reason. He would have believed there was still another conversation tomorrow, but there wasn't.
He remembered going home, convinced that if he became a better footballer, a little older, a little more patient, perhaps one day the answer would change. Answer from the first person he ever liked, the first person he imagined growing old alongside, the first person who taught him that sometimes love simply wasn't enough– he wanted to tell Pep all of this, but instead what came out of his mouth was:
