Summary
As the end of 1955 approaches, Margaret Houlihan finally gets what she's been craving since the armistice in Korea: a way out of the goddamn Army, and for good.
But she has other cravings, too. Cravings that she's looking forward to satisfying with Trapper John McIntyre when she receives a letter inviting her to spend Christmas with him in Boston, which conveniently mentions his divorce and inconveniently fails to mention that he has a permanent roommate in the form of Hawkeye Pierce.
That's not so bad, is it? If she can put aside her thoughts of her father's looming disapproval, her complete and total lack of non-military contacts, her upcoming need to suck up to Charles Emerson Winchester III for a job, and her general failure to obtain civilian life skills, she might even be able to satisfy her cravings with both of them.

Summary
Essek goes home, and there is no one waiting at his door. This should be some manner of relief. But his towers haven't felt like a safe haven for a long time now, long before errant scourgers appeared to harass him with strange questions. He misses the immediacy of that threat, prefers it over the slow and indulgent terror of whatever punishment is coming for him, someday soon.
He tells himself that he misses only that, the simplicity of being unsafe in the company of predators, and that he does not miss the company itself.
(In which a pair of scourgers shows up at Essek’s doorstep and saves him from himself.)
