Summary
It’s easy to say what drew Occtis to the study of anatomy in the first place and quite a bit harder to say what made him stick to it with such fervor. No one else in his family studied the parts of the body, in fact, they didn’t study much of anything at all. A sorcerer doesn’t need to know the name of the nerves they alight with magic, what the flesh is called that heeds your call. All that matters is that it obeys.
Occtis has never made a body obey him, and honestly that includes his own.

Summary
"We can start tomorrow."
"Or we start tonight."
Occtis gestures around the space. "I'm not exactly equipped tonight, Julien."
Julien's smirk is as infuriating as always. "Swordsmanship starts with the basic principles of combat. We do not need swords to start tonight." He beckons Occtis over. "Easy enough for a smart boy like you to pick up on."
Occtis discovering himself, as he is now.

Summary
Elias hires a monster to work in the archives. One small decision that shouldn't make much of a difference.
Until someone's putting googly eyes over everything in the Institute, Melanie's having pizza parties to save the almost-life of a manifestation of the Stranger, Sasha's writing off payments for illegal phone hacks as a work expense, and Tim's trying to figure out how many helium balloons one needs to fill the boss' office with in order to get fired.
Oh yeah, and they still need to save the world.

Summary
Before the institute, there was a stranger, who became a friend, who burned books.
***
“So you what, you… you hunt these books? Destroy them?”
Gerard shrugged. “Best I can. They seem to evade capture, if we’re going with your ‘hunt’ metaphor. Although I seem to have something of a knack for finding them. As, apparently, do you.”
“Probably shouldn’t think too hard about that.” Jon shifted uncomfortably. “About how maybe once you’ve found one…”
Gerard smirked. “Doesn’t make sense.”
There was a twinkle in his eye, and against every instinct in his body, Jon found a small, ironic smile settle itself on his lips. “No, I suppose it doesn’t. Which likely means it’s true.”
