It was good, Saguru thought, that the Task Force had sent him the reports. Because between the drug and the disconcerting nature of the situation, he was pretty certain no one had noticed that the last owner had died shortly after KID, a known jewel thief, had reappeared. That, together with the gem suddenly emptying itself completely instead of just a bit like with the other owners, implied that someone had manipulated the gem.
Someone had tried to kill Kaitou KID.
And they’d very nearly succeeded.
or : Kaito wakes up in a storage room wearing his KID outfit. He has two gems with him, which doesn’t really make up for having no idea how he got there.

He’d raised the gun and there had been no explicit thought, but he’d decided that either this would work or he wouldn’t need to live. He’d raised the gun and only been spared from pulling the trigger because his copy was quicker.

“Oakhurst…” Hm, sounded vaguely familiar.

“I’m fine.” KID said, standing up. He didn’t turn around fully, but he did angle himself backwards just a bit to look at Saguru, so he could see half of his face. He would have been able to see more, had KID’s hands not been covering the other half. Thick, dark liquid was steadily dripping from it, onto his collar. Saguru must have looked as horrified as he felt, because KID’s visible eye sharpened. “I’m fine.” He insisted.
“Obviously not!” Saguru answered, louder than he intended. “Kuroba, your face is literally covered in-“
“Nothing.” Kuroba interrupted, a panicked edge in his voice. “There’s nothing there because I’m fine.”
Kaito gets shot at a heist. This leads to revelations for both him and a certain blonde detective chasing him.

So when KID finally appeared at the beginning of the heist, balancing on a hair thin steal wire while quite a bit up from the ground—
“Oi, KID! Don’t you dare be careless and slip, do you hear me?!”
—he’d just shouted on instinct. It wasn’t that weird— ever since that heist with the daring lady (who had since been charged with harassment) the Task Force had adopted a habit of asking KID about his day, subtly inquiring about his home life and sometimes even (making attempts at) scolding him for his less than stellar life choices, which most of the times meant injuries or extremely reckless stunts.
“I would never, Dad.” KID responded, tone as careless as always.

Long explanation:
The death games were created by Danganronpa for entertainment but scientists that were aware of the games existence used it as a base for their experimentation. All killing games were simulations. All victims survived, but they still need to be freed from Danganronpa so they don’t end up stuck in the game. Kamimura survives the attempted murder in the third chapter, even though they were extremely injured. At the end of Tetro Pink he is free from the simulation, but he still wants to free others from the killing games and end the existence of the killing games. He infiltrates Dv3 as Kokichi Ouma and creates a persona to avoid suspicion from those controlling the game.The plan is going well until everyone (including the “dead” people) appears in a theater to react to Danganronpa Tetro Pink.

Caine's dreams had never simulated physical touch before. None of his dreams had access to those senses! But he felt Ragatha's hand in his. He froze in place, staring at their clasped palms. He felt it. He felt the fibers catch on his, the friction heating up his glove ever so slightly.
