This town was empty, aside from Maelle. Her footsteps disturb a silence that’s been settled long before her arrival. The air felt tainted with her breath, the town shied away from her sight.She shouldn’t be here.
Maelle rationalized that the feeling is normal, she just isn’t used to feeling like this when she is alone.
There is a comfort in her solitude, and though she is granted that now, the displacement rips her away from such. There is nothing else for her to do but continue forward.
So that’s what she will do. Even if it disturbs the town's own seclusion. Disrupting each other, in a way.

Unbeknownst to them, their arrival was foretold, and they are the only ones standing in the way of the canvas' painted world bleeding into their own.

Verso saw Maelle's fate in his mother's heartbreaking descent into all-consuming obsession. He didn't want this for her. His decision was clear. The canvas had to be erased. And he got his say. It was being erased before his very eyes. But... why wasn't he? Why was he... being pulled out into reality?
[ In an anguished whisper, he exhaled, “I’m tired… I’m so tired… I can finally rest now. I know this is hurting you. But can you be happy for me? Just a little? In your own big world… in your little room… would you think of me and spare a smile for me? Would you remember me as I am, not as you wished me to be?”
Heaving one last sigh, Verso closed his eyes. He was finally at peace. He could feel the beginning of his own disintegration.
But then…
In a last ditch effort, Maelle threw her arms around his neck and clung. Hard. He could feel her nails digging into his skin.
“I’m not letting you go,” she promised, half devoted, half feral. ]

Her hands turn into fists, her nails digging into her own palms. Her vision blurs at the tears that form around her eyes. The phantom snake around her neck mocks her, embracing her further into its body, until she finds it hard to breathe.
“I’m going to kill them. Every single one of them. I will settle this, once and for all.”
“I know, and I won’t stop you.”
This may be her solitary war, but she needs all the help she can get, nonetheless. She may prefer doing this all alone, to exact vengeance her way, but part of her really would rather not. Renoir is already out of the picture, and she didn’t want Alicia to get involved in this, either. No one will lay a finger against her sister ever again.
A proposition crosses her mind.
In which Clea finds herself at an impasse in her solitary war, unable to find a lead. Against her better judgment, she seeks the help of Gustave, a bonafide Writer.

“It was the second one,” she continues, pressing hard fingers onto the bridge of her nose. “I get to this huge fucking manor, and this lady opens the door, looking down on me like I’m dirt on the bottom of her shoe, right? Refusing to let me in, telling me nothing in there is my business, the works. You know it’s bad when they won’t let you in.”
