His reaction made Michael unsure, but David had asked him a question, so he would answer. "The lesser of the pack doesn't eat before the alpha."

"David, he– He was dead!" Michael reminded everyone. All eyes were on him now, but he didn't care. He was pretty sure the situation called for a moment where at least one of them got to freak out.

"We're willing to make a deal." Ryan had lied, knowing full well he had no authority to offer anyone anything. Hell, the FBI didn't even know he was holding a press conference. "If any follower, or acolyte, of Joe Carroll is willing to cooperate with the federal authorities, they will be given full immunity from prosecution for any crimes that they may have committed."
Ryan wasn't holding his breath waiting for someone to show up at the station. Still, when his cellphone rang not even half an hour later and he read No Caller ID on the screen, he allowed himself to hope, to believe that maybe, just maybe, he had been convincing enough.
"Hardy." He answered, his heart beating louder in his ears.
"It's Wells."

David couldn't say what in particular struck him that night. He just knew that as he felt Tony get up to leave again, the mattress creaking just slightly, as he had done countless times in the past few months, something inside him broke.
