Summary
Throughout five seasons and sixty-five episodes, we - and therefore Merlin - never once heard the actual prophecy that guided, led, and dragged our characters to their ends. There were quotes and excerpts, cliff notes and summaries, but never once the prophecy itself.
Merlin stood by Arthur’s side for more than a decade, working toward their shared future without ever once hearing the prophecy that foretold it.
How would things have changed if he had heard it?

Summary
“You don’t seem like a king.”
Arthur lowered the scroll onto his lap and peered over at the child, curious and maybe a little offended. “Why not?”
Merlin shrugged. “You don’t sound like a king, for one.”
“And pray tell, Merlin, how is a king supposed to sound?”
“I don’t know,” he muttered. “Strong. Powerful.” Suddenly Merlin sat up straight, puffing his chest out and pinching his face into a rugged scowl. His voice pitched low, sounding odd in his young body. “My name’s Arthur Pendragon,” he imitated theatrically.
Arthur couldn’t help his amused snort at his antics. “Wrong," he said, returning to the scroll. "A king doesn’t have to say his name, the people would already know it.”
Merlin smiled, a teasing gleam in his eyes. “A good king doesn’t,” he mumbled under his breath, obviously still intending for Arthur to hear.
“The only reason I don’t ‘sound like a king’ is because I have to put up with all your insolence.”
That gloating smile grew on Merlin’s lips and Arthur knew he was going to lose this battle. “A good king wouldn’t put up with that either.”

Summary
What is one to do when every duty demands the compromise of one’s values, or worse, the betrayal of oneself and others? It is a question Arthur finds himself unexpectedly debating, as Camelot is besieged by bandits from the north and the men meant to guide him demand things he no longer believes he can give... or at least force him to ask the question, 'Am I my father's son?'
Meanwhile, Merlin has somehow become responsible for two half-feral druid children, and he is not entirely sure how that happened. But as something stolen from Cathay threatens to set Camelot aflame, he finds himself absurdly relieved to have more eyes watching the shadows.
Content warning for domestic violence depicted at chapter 6. There is a summary if you would like to avoid that.
