    It is a funny shape, the mark on his maman’s chest.

    It is not a circle like his cerceau, nor an oval like the patch Matilde had sewn to cover the hole in his brother’s culottes, but it is something between and also completely different, because it is not just that it is a wobbly round thing, its rim goes in and out too. Sometimes, the line of it is dark and deep and redder than his belly after Gregoire pinches it, and sometimes it is smooth and faint and barely there at all, like it’s been drawn not with quill and ink but finger and water.

    What could have left it, he wonders, as she turns the page of her book.
