“Okie-dokes.” Kuroba shakes himself, and then turns to wave at the waiting group of suspects and witnesses with a reassuring smile. They stare blankly at him.

    “They’re traumatized, Kaito-san.”

    “I know. That’s why I’m being nice.”

Shinichi grabs Kuroba’s jacket and starts yanking him toward the group, ignoring his annoyed muttering. In Kuroba’s defense, he’s very good at looking reassuring. It’s just a lot less effective when he’s standing next to the corpse.

Athena’s eyes flash and glow, and she raises her hands. Annabeth closes her eyes, and everything in the air sizzles to a stop. There is a faint sea breeze, and then a familiar presence at her side.

“It would be unwise of you to hurt her.”

She opens her eyes to her boyfriend’s dad standing behind her, his eyes intent on her mother, who looks like she’s about to blow her top. Annabeth doesn’t breathe, doesn’t look away from Athena, but she takes several quick steps back to stand at Poseidon’s side. It’s not conscious; it’s a move based purely on self-preservation. Still, Annabeth is aware that every step she takes into the sea increases her mother’s ire and decreases the likelihood that Annabeth will ever be forgiven.

A goddess of mercy hears a plea for justice, and sends her champion to a world with neither mercy or justice. Systlin is appalled by what she finds, but she's used to standing like a rock and making the world change around her. A reckoning comes to Gor, and there isn't a goddamned thing any of the fucking fucks on Gor can do about it.
Systlin is my own OC from my original work. Is she overpowered? Probably but you can't stop me. Look me in the eyes, Goreans and John Norman. I'm the captain of this ship now.
EDIT; apparently this has spawned several other fics where ridiculously OP female protags get thrown onto Gor and react with gratuitous violence, and may I just say; I'm so proud of all of you.
I fucking told you, John Norman. I'm the captain of this ship now.

Meryl can't reconcile within her mind, a seraphic face and the eyes of a sufferer. "Well?" she asks again because she can't help herself. Everyone has a daemon on Gunsmoke, and the absence of one is jarring.

His smile strains. "It's complicated," says Vash, because it always is.

Daemons are part of whatever normalcy has been left of Earth, carried over light centuries by humanity. Records through time on No Man's Land claim that the notorious Humanoid Typhoon, Vash the Stampede, does not, in fact, have one.

“‘So, what am I s’posed to look out for? Sinners? Signs and wonders? The devil themself, lurkin’ ’round the corner to lure me into a life’a degeneracy?’

The expression of the stranger in white lights up like Wolfwood has presented him with the most wondrous gift.

‘Very glad you asked. Angels, sir! Real life angels! Well, you’re most likely to know them under the colloquial term Plant, but that is so... technical, don’t you think? Unbearably plain. It is divinity made flesh we are talking about, after all!’”

In which some people worship Plants as angels of salvation and Nicholas D. Wolfwood comes to regret not making this particular cult his problem sooner rather than never.

Wolfwood’s pulse fluttered. Slow, weak, but there. Any other human could not have survived with a pulse this slow for this long, but whatever they had made him into was keeping him alive. His skin was cool against Vash’s fingers, but not cold. Not dead. Just close enough to fool him into digging half a grave.
Vash closed his eyes and leaned forward, resting his forehead against Wolfwood’s.
“Live until I get back, okay?”

“A little more than a month,” Vash told him. “We were starting to think you wouldn’t wake up.” Vash was positively beaming at him, that real smile on his face, but his voice wobbled a little when he said that.

Vash shrugged. “I had nothing else to do.”

Vash opened his eyes and began to sit up - and heard a gunshot.

Hosanna - an appeal for divine help or salvation; a cry of praise

Wolfwood wakes to the sound of bells.

When he is lifted from the tomb, broken marble pushed unceremoniously aside by the only man this side of Octovern who could make it look easy, it is only the way that he flinches instinctively away from the sunlight that convinces the gathering crowd that he isn’t still dead. One head towers above the rest, face painted with something nameless, horror and elation crashing together at once as he stares into the grave.

    “Let’s bring him home, Livio.”

“I know what you’re planning. And if you think you’re doing it for me, then how about you ask what I want, huh? How about you don’t leave me to pick up the pieces alone?”
Knives does not respond immediately. He watches as Vash tucks his head on top of his knees, fingers toying with something metallic on a chain around his neck. It has a simple design, two lines overlapping at 90 degrees, like a trunk with two branches either side. The moonlight catches on it, sending a sliver of silver across the sand. Knives understands.
“You don’t want to be alone?” Vash shakes his head, petulant. “You won’t be.”

What he understood was this: Vash regretted what he had become. He regretted turning into what he deemed as a monster he’d been fighting for his entire life, lurking beneath his skin. He would regret this for the rest of his life, for however long he had left.

The anger is surprising in its intensity, but only for that. He’s been angry at Wolfwood for a long time, without a ghost’s face to fling his fury into.
It was that or collapse from the despair of it. What Wolfwood had done. Had chosen to do.
Wolfwood had seen Vash descend to his rescue and still gone through with it, what Vash could only, in hindsight, call a suicide.

    Summary

Wolfwood supposed it was fitting in a cosmic sense that the highest of men had fallen back to the earth on their waxen wings. Perhaps that was why Vash could no longer take to the skies, despite the titanic wings that fluttered behind them. Even from afar, Wolfwood could see the ugliness that Vash felt within them. They were crooked and wrong — stunted like a scarred chest bound too tight. Do that long enough and you damn near train your body to accept failing lungs as a new standard of living.

    What a way to live.

Thinking you’re only ever as much as your clipped wings and harsh bindings.

Wolfwood marveled at the fact. What a shitty way to die in half as many steps.

When he next looked down at Vash, he found impossibly baby-blue eyes staring back at him. There was a pleading look about it all as Vash weakly grabbed Wolfwood's hands. Vash was shaking hard enough that he could hear the man’s teeth chatter painfully with the effort it took to simply be present.

“Please,” Vash finally outright begged with a hoarse sob.

    . . .

With Vash injured after the fight with Livio, it's up to Wolfwood to pick up all the broken pieces left behind.

Vash sat at the edge of existence with the broken bodies of all wonderful things in the world that’d been ruined for him. He thought frequently back to geraniums and little passerines like they’d bring him back to better times. Of all the stains and scars that peppered his body, this was the one he had the hardest time looking at, because it wasn’t as gruesome as a physical loss, like his arm. This was something that’d been gouged out of his heart where no one else could see it. Childhood innocence was so frequently stolen from the children of Gunsmoke, so Vash tried often to rationalize the loss. Many others had felt worse before, so why did Vash still hurt?

He pressed his face against the tank where his sister drifted. Her eyes tracked him as he approached, but there was no intent behind the gaze: she was distant, fading, nearly lost. Vash’s eyes and skin lit turquoise with edges of soft purple, chromatophores pulsing in the universal language of plants. The oscillation of light and color were the simplest connection he could make with a near-lost sister through the glass. The dim-bright-dim signaled hello, drawing the attention of the other plant’s eyes and pattern-recognizing neurons. Her awareness of this body, so delicate even in full bloom, was choked and broken like a freshly bent stem. He needed to call her back into herself.

Cautiously, Livio walked into the kitchen. He kept his shoulders hunched to make himself look smaller, though since he was as wide as Meryl was tall and had a whole head on Milly, it didn’t count for much. His chair creaked as he sat, fiddling with his hair.
As soon as he’d walked in Vash had stiffened almost imperceptibly. Meryl had stiffened very perceptibly, even going so far as to move her hand closer to one of the knives.
Thank God for Milly Thompson. She reached a hand over, beaming. “Nice to meet you, mister Livio! I’m Milly Thompson, your brother’s a good friend of mine. Would you like a hair tie?”
