Shane’s anxiety takes a quick backseat to annoyance once more, at being handled like a child instead of a grown man, like he hasn’t been doing this just as long as Ilya, like he needs someone to tell him when to take a break.
Like he deserved to have everything taken away from him because he couldn’t handle it to start with.
“I’m fine,” he says, voice icy.
The step he takes away is too big, farther than he meant to get from Ilya’s side, and the air between them feels both charged and icy.
He isn’t quite bold enough to try and fix it.

Great characterization. Shane and Ilya love each other very much, but Pen allows Shane to feel the loss and anxiety that came with having his choices taken away from him. Shane tries to bottle everything up but therapy, a failed therapy dog, and some healthy communication eventually get him to happiness and stability.
And I know it’s not fair. I know you gave things up, too, and you did it first and-” His voice breaks, and he’s angry and ashamed and so, so fucking tired. “But I-” He bites the words back again, knowing that what he’s about to say is selfish and unfair.
“But?” Ilya coaxes anyway, because he’s good and generous and kind and loving, and Shane hates himself that there is a little tiny part of him that still resents him anyway.
“You got to choose it,” Shane says, miserable and ashamed but unable to keep silent about it anymore. “And I know you chose it for me, and I love you for that, but I-I didn’t get to pick any of this, Ilya. I got you, and I’m so, so fucking happy about that, but I lost everything else. And I didn’t get to choose it. It just fucking happened to me. It-” He takes a breath that shudders more than he would like it to. “It still feels like it’s just always still happening to me.”

When Stannis was gone, Renly couldn’t help but look up once more, towards the comet hanging in the sky. Bright red, and so far away. It had appeared last night and would surely vanish from the sky within the evening, continuing its course through space away from the planet with no name where Renly had been reborn. The planet where, he knew, he would face dragons and monsters born from the cold.
Renly turned away. The comet did not mean anything. He had more pressing matters to attend anyway. He was going North to meet the infamous Ned Stark. With any luck, maybe he would finally find the beginning of the Plot.
Or maybe the Plot would find him.

Fascinating self insert where the SI only knows there’s a war and Daenerys and something about the long night, but very few details. Renly is a very capable courtier and at one point had warm relations with the lannisters. Renly tried to teach Ned about court stuff and Ned reluctantly learned.
Ch 30
Spoilers below!Renly’s interventions have resulted in a trueborn daughter Jocelyn Baratheon, close relations with Dorne, a better informed Ned, and better relations with his siblings. This Renly is suited to be the Hand and a maester, and has created some tech uplift by funding concrete and healthcare. He also uses his Red Cross as a spy network. He’s FWB with Daemon Sand rn, but there were rumors of him having a lowborn mistress and relationship with Arianne, so there’s less suspicion of him being gay. The red woman has arrived on Dragonstone. Ned brought various bannermen and Theon south with him, and Jon and Bran will be with Renly. Edric met Tyrion at the wall. Jocelyn interfered in the whole Joffrey Nymeria thing, making Joffrey look worse to Robert and the North. Robert was big mad at Joffrey but Jaime went ahead and killed Nymeria without authorization. Renly convinced Robert to send Joffrey to Tywin to squire and make Stannis Warden of the East. Ned was unhappy with the squiring plan, basically broke the betrothal, and sent Arya and Lady back to winterfell. The crown is only 3 mil in debt bc Renly silently supports Stannis more. Stannis doesn’t tell Renly about the incest suspicions because Renly would tell Jocelyn who wouldn’t keep it secret. Edric decided to leave the wall with Tyrion and Emmon. Dany spoke to Janis Slynt and is still very naive and misguided.

Fun and sweet while also diving into institutional homophobia and power structures. Perfect mix of all the things I love about this fandom. Crowell busts out all the union busting tactics and CIRCUS fights back.

Ch 42
Ilya created a giant organization (300+ so far) of straight allies, out players, queer players, and queer employees.
2020 we’re entering the Long Game era. Troy to became the PA union rep. Luca is a mod on MLHCorruption and figured everything out. Ilya and Ryan met up with Mastur Bates (Montreal owner) and did a quid pro quo for him to look at ousting Crowell. Haas did a honeypot for rookies but Kent found out and told Crowell. Crowell accused Ilya of being the ringleader and said “this entire team is dead.” That recording was posted on RogueMLH with the implication that Crowell messed with the plane. Troy came out. Ilya put together an audio file of incriminating Crowell recordings to blackmail Crowell with, and Hayden accidentally leaked it via fanmail. Hollanov are not talking to each other and both want to play for Ottawa together. The trip still happened. Ilya won the cup. At MLH awards, Shane declared he was moving to his husband’s team, and that that husband is Ilya. People were unhappy about Ottawa’s undefeated streak with the first husbands of hockey, and Ilya retired to become commissioner.
