Jon blinked. That made even less sense than the idea that they were treating him as some sort of zoo animal. 'Probably not,' he finally managed. 'Are you?'
Helen tilted her head to the side, seeming to consider her reply. 'That depends on you.'”
Or: the one where, after the archival assistants stage their 'intervention' to stop Jon from taking live statements, a little group of avatars, assembled by Helen, stage a different intervention.
They agree he's making terrible life choices. They have very different opinions about what those terrible life choices are.
(Or: wanna see how many TMA-related heartbreaks I can fix by giving Jon some actual friends?)

Oh it's *gorgeous.* They remind me of us of Watcher's Hangout - that won't mean anything to most people, but it's - a TMA roleplay group - and many of us are Avatars and we very much have this kind of - cross-Power comradery and attempted understanding and that feeling of We're Not Human And That's Okay.

Jon keeps finding tape recorders innocuously whirring away every time he talks to Martin. Then every time he so much as sees Martin, there's one there, listening. Recording. Even Jon can deliberately ignore tape recorders falling out of thin air for only so long.
It leaves the question of why.

Summary
It’s Melanie who finds the tape.
"Statement of Fiona Law, regarding the death of Angus Stacey, her subsequent release from the role of Archival Assistant, and her decision to continue regardless."
It is wedged between a fissure in a groaning filing cabinet and the tiled edge of an ancient fireplace. To access it, she has to peel back a bit of woodworm-ridden panelling and flick it out with a pen. It clatters to her feet and she almost crushes it underfoot because even though she no longer has the phantom resonance of a gunshot in her veins, it sings to her a song of slaughter.
She laughs, humourlessly, just once, and the gleeful roar of a gallows crowd echoes.

As time moves on, Martin begins to notice that he doesn’t mind Peter’s company as he thought he would.
And Peter realizes he cares for Martin much more than he should as an avatar of The Lonely ...Or: Martin fully embraces his role as the assistant to an avatar of The Lonely and develops powers of his own.

Peter and Elias adopt a fifteen-year-old Martin. It goes as well as you’d expect.
It sounds like he’s reading from a brochure, Martin thinks fleetingly, vaguely amused. These men – his new parents – do not seem like they know what they are doing.
“Peter,” Elias says dangerously. “Place in the family. Reaffirming.”
(Taking a last long look at the employee contract in his hand, Martin sighs. “Dad is so going to divorce you for this” He signs the papers with a sense of inevitability.)
