Anyway, what happens when Jax decides to plan a surprise for Pomni, and the entire Circus conspires to keep her from finding out? Chaos. Obviously.

    I can’t draw, but I can write! (Sometimes.) 💜

“No, no–“ he frantically shakes his head. “You’re not getting it. I mean, whatever you were about to say—I’m sure it’s very interesting. Would love to hear about it. But… that’s not the problem. The problem is… when it comes to you–“ he pauses–“I can’t decide. I can’t decide what love language I prefer, or what sort of affection I’d like to receive, b-because… when it comes to you, I want… whatever you’ll give me.”

The entire world comes to a standstill.

She doesn’t say a word. She finds herself tongue-tied for the moment, actually.

“I know,” he continues. “I know that’s pathetic. But there’s your answer, mm’kay? I… I am pathetic. Some days it’s like I really am a street dog begging for scraps. I don’t rank and rate all the ways you… show love to me. Or care. Or… whatever we’re calling it. I just know I always want more. Which is crazy, because I already get plenty. More than I deserve… more than—more than I can believe I would’ve ever gotten. And that terrifies me.”

He regards her with that very visage of terror, then quickly looks away again.

“I’m always afraid, actually. That one day I’m gonna cross a line, take it too far,” he laments, in his own personal hell. “That I’ll finally get too greedy and you’ll stop giving me my fix. Cut me off…”

He pulled even more, letting the tie completely loosen at his throat before he was taking it off one-pawed and tossing it onto the table. Then, he moved that paw to the back of his neck and tilted his head back to stretch, giving her an even better view.

Her parents were still yammering on the phone, and yet, she couldn’t keep her eyes off Nick, inappropriately remembering what he said moments before her parents called.

    Eager, are we?

    “Yes.”

oh, and her and nick’s relationship shouldn’t be that different from before… right?

A childish idea popped into her head.

She picked up her toy walkie-talkie, pressed on the button that didn’t do anything and spoke into it.

“Officer Wilde, this is Hopps, 10-33. Kale cabin two, Bunnyburrow. Over.”

10-33. There is an emergency. Officer is in need of help.

Nick tilted his head in curiosity, but his smile got wider as he took the walkie-talkie from her, pressing the button and speaking into it as if it were a real one. He used that professional voice he would put on whenever he actually had to call codes in their cruiser.

    “Copy, Hopps. 10-97. Situation? Over.”

10-97. Officer has arrived on scene to assist.

He handed Judy the walkie-talkie, and she didn’t even bother with the professional voice nor the codes as she gazed at him. She pressed on the button, holding the walkie talkie with both of her paws because saying something like this made her ears heat up, her heart squeeze, and her chest buzz. She still kept her eyes on him, even as she wanted to drop her gaze, feeling flustered and yet, giddy.

“…My heart is going to burst,” she said, her voice soft and shaky. “And it’s all your fault.”

He blinked, then a smug grin graced his lips. He reached for her, holding onto her paws, clutching them more firmly once she had dropped the walkie-talkie, and it landed on her lap. She couldn’t use her paws to hide her muzzle.

He leaned in closer, cocking his head to the side as he regarded her, studying her.

“That doesn’t sound very professional, Officer Hopps,” he said, lowering his voice.
