The boy startled, eyes snapping to him. They were blue and wide, almost startled like a deer’s. He stared at Shane’s mouth as he spoke, brow furrowing. Shane waited. The boy said something back, quiet, careful. The sounds were unfamiliar, rounded and soft.
He pointed to himself hesitantly. “Ilya.”
Shane smiled widely. “That’s a cool name.”
Ilya didn’t react. He just watched Shane, uncertainty written in every line of his body.
Shane tried again. He pointed at himself. “Shane.” Then he pointed at Ilya. “Ilya.” He held up two fingers, then pushed his stick forward so it tapped lightly against Ilya’s. “Together?”
