Summary
His point was that he would willingly and without a second of hesitation trade his life for theirs. They had made his life worth living in the first place: without them it would go back to the way it had been before he knew what friendship and love and unconditional kindness from his peers felt like. Sometimes he was thankful for the stark contrast because it meant that he was able to properly see how much they did for him without getting complacent or taking their affection for granted.
He would trade his life for his friends.
Without a second of hesitation.

When she finally came in, it was a clear and sunny day. Nothing at all like someone would expect. Blonde hair, smile lines all around her eyes. She seemed almost afraid of being here. Worried about what could happen to herself. Aizawa introduced her with a long-winded speech that he clearly hadn’t written out himself. Something about how every hero was required to meet up with her before acquiring their permanent license to guarantee they wouldn’t be a liability on the field should they be confronted with their fears. All in all sound logic, if a little strange considering what their class had already gone through in their by now almost complete high school careers. Katsuki didn’t even catch her name before he drifted off. He only came back to the class discussion once one of the extras asked a question. “So what your saying is that her quirk will let her manifest our greatest fear or regret, so we have to physically confront them?”

Mera doesn’t react audibly as Hawks relays the details the Doctor gathered until now, including the fact Dabi was affected.
“Why not bring Dabi into custody?”
“He might kill us both if I do that,” Hawks states and Dabi doesn’t even look offended. He actually nods.
“What is your plan, then?”
“Going somewhere secluded for at least a couple months.”

After the high-end Nomu battle in Fukuoka, Dabi and Hawks are hit by a quirk that leaves them with two newborn clones, whose well being is entangled with their own. They can’t get rid of the clones, can’t be physically away from them, and can’t afford to kill each other; thus, Hawks is stuck with a terrorist and two infants he needs to protect from 1) Dabi’s own suicidal tendencies so no one dies, and 2) from both the League and the HPSC so no one makes weapons out of these kids.
They move to an isolated safe house up north, where they find that childcare is a lighter burden in good company, as well as unpacking their own childhood traumas. If proximity and isolation brings them a little too close, who can blame them?

But they find themselves interrupted by an overeager Dabi enthusiast, and end up launched into the past, rewound to proper health, and left with no way back to the present.
It is, incidentally, the most perfect second chance either could receive. But will they have the strength to rekindle their old flames, or will their ashes scatter across the timeline, extinguished for good?
