Victoria might have liked to stay.
It was hardly unreasonable, was it? All the others had, after all, and some of them had stayed in far worse places than this. But it simply hadn’t occurred to him that Victoria’s time might be approaching.
Maybe he had grown complacent, really, so used to Jamie walking beside him and promising him forever. It ought to have been his turn to go, after all, now that Ben and Polly had found their way home. But Jamie stood so firm, and made that promise with so much steady confidence. And now the Doctor was starting to wonder whether there was a part of him, buried deep in his hearts, that believed it as much as Jamie seemed to.
They all promised him forever, though. In their own ways. And a Time Lord, of all people, should know that no forever really endured.
Five times the Doctor couldn't bring himself to say goodbye to Victoria, and one time he managed it.

Summary
His coat was folded beside him, the ragged edges of his cut-off shirtsleeves cast into stark relief by the strengthening light. There was something fragile about him, sat there all on his own, without the usual bulk of his coat. But his face was turned towards the dawn, his eyes closed against the sun. Like a cat, Jamie thought, or a lizard. Something basking in the warmth of the day.
He must have moved them for a reason. And he’d gone out, climbed all the way to the top of the ridge, and sat there. If he really had been out of bed for an hour – that was a long time for him to hold still of his own accord.
A few weeks into working for the Time Lords, Jamie wakes up alone.

Summary
“How can he – do that?” Her voice was loud in the quiet of the room, louder than she’d meant it to be. Louder than it really was, maybe, with the Doctor looking at her like that. “How can he – talk to that robot like it’s a person?”
To his credit, the Doctor’s expression didn’t turn smug, or gloating. He didn’t even smile. All he did was tilt his head to one side, like he was sizing her up, deciding what to make of her.
“Isn’t it?” he said, and there was a challenge there.
But Zoe hadn’t surrendered yet.
On an abandoned colony world, the Doctor and Zoe are racing against time to preserve the power supply of the robots left behind. And yet Zoe can't help but be distracted by the way the robots act as if they're human.
After all, something programmed for pure logic can't defy it's nature - can it?

“Zoe! Not you too!” The Doctor shakes his head and rounds the two, stepping directly in the path between Jamie and the timelords. Zoe could get clear past should she want to, but Jamie and the Doctor both know that between the two of them she’s not the one who will go charging in. “That’s enough of that sort of talk!” He lets out a huff of air and looks from Jamie’s face to Zoe’s. “No one is going to die,” and then he mutters, as if unable to help himself, “aside from myself.”“What?” Jamie’s voice is barely a whimper.
Zoe’s voice carries much farther, “You can’t die Doctor!”
It was as if the whole world had gone mad. The Doctor? Dead? Jamie could feel his face grow red from rage as his nostrils flared. “They cannae kill you!” He glares at the timelords, but the other men seem completely unfazed. They have no idea how close they’re getting to meet their makers. “They’ll ‘ave to kill me if they want to get to ye.”
“No, no they will not.” The Doctor presses the flats of his hands on the front of Jamie’s shoulders.
