Sometimes, Bruce wondered if things between them would have been different had it not taken three weeks between the night the Graysons died and the day Bruce finally cut through the red tape keeping Dick at the juvenile detention centre. When he thought back to that fractured little boy in the blood-stained leotard whose hand he had held for hours, he was unrecognizable as the same boy Bruce collected from that secure unit; something in those three weeks had broken the Dick Grayson that had been before, and Bruce would only ever know the person composed of the pieces left behind.
The silence had taken days to break, and the first thing the new Dick Grayson had said to Bruce was, “You’ll never be my dad.”
And Bruce, who had raised and ruined and lost three sons already, had no idea just how true that would be.
