Summary
There was a white beam rising from somewhere beyond the rooftops, stark against the dark sky, reaching toward the clouds. The people on the sidewalk outside the diner had noticed it too, some stopping dead in their tracks to stare, others fumbling with their phones to take a picture.
“Guess that’s your cue,” Dick said.
“Yeah,” Jason muttered.
But even as he reached for his jacket, even as he slid out of the booth, he felt a familiar cold drop in his stomach. Some part of him wanted to sit back down, to let Dick finish the story they’d left hanging, to tell him—
Jason didn’t know. There should have been something to say to close this out properly—a promise to call, some stupid joke to break the quiet, an apology he wasn’t sure was his to give—something better than just standing up and leaving Dick here mid-sentence. But nothing came to him. Every word felt too heavy, too loaded with everything they’d spent the last hour avoiding, and the brief window to speak closed before he could open his mouth.
In which Jason has a totally normal, uneventful evening.

“Sorry to just drop in like this,” Head had said, smiling shyly. “I know it’s not exactly protocol, but I was already downtown and I figured—why not, right? Hope I’m not throwing a wrench in your afternoon.”
He’d sounded apologetic enough, but Donna couldn’t help but think that if he was really, truly sorry about the inconvenience, he would have called ahead of time. He would have scheduled a meeting on Monday or some other day when a more senior IRO—if not Lucius Fox himself—would be there to greet him, instead of showing up out of the blue and rattling her floor into panic.
But Donna knew better than to say any of that aloud. These nepo babies and trust-fund princes weren’t used to being told no, and to start now was way above her pay grade.
So she’d plastered on her best smile and said, “Not at all. It’s a pleasure to meet you, Mr. Head. Welcome to Wayne Enterprises.”
In which Jason decides to be a menace—as seen through the eyes of a no-nonsense Wayne Enterprises employee.

Nearly a decade after clawing his way out of his own coffin, Jason returns to Gotham to settle old debts. In the apartment across the hall, Dick is haunted by his brother's presence everywhere he turns.
In four months, the clown will be dead."'Tis an unweeded garden that grows to seed; things rank and gross in nature possess it merely," Jason muttered under his breath, gazing up at the thunderous sky. The logical course of action would tell him to wait until summer, when the aches and pains were nothing more than a phantom, but the more satisfying conclusion held his interest. Four months—then he'd settle what he came to this graveyard of a city to do. It would be more satisfying in winter. A bookend to the life of Jason Todd, a cremation that he would rise from the ashes of. As who, he wasn't really sure.
