Dick didn't go to bed. He went back to the office instead, and sat down in the chair behind the desk - not Bruce's chair, he told himself, just a chair, just furniture - and didn't turn on the light. The book sat where he'd left it, half an inch wrong, in the dark.
Bruce was dead, he thought again, and this time didn't bother making it sound like anything other than what it was. The thought didn’t help. It just made him ache, somewhere deep inside him, for the one man he wanted to talk to about all this. The one man who was impossible for him to have.

To his surprise, it was not weapons or armor, or even one of the more romantic gifts Talia used to send him. Instead, it was a large, leather-bound book, thick and new. He ran his fingers over the cover and flipped it open. His breath caught as he saw the first page.
A photo of a little boy, no more than two, wrapped up in a huge Batman cape that practically swallowed him whole, green eyes piercing through the cowl. Beneath, in Talia's spiky cursive, read: Damian, age 2 and ½.
