Summary
"They never talked, and maybe they should've, maybe things would be different if they had. And it seems they can't talk properly now either. The sunk cost fallacy. Earl's voice breaks on his confession, just before the words that would hurt the most to hear — words he would be ecstatic to hear nonetheless. They never talked so he never knew for certain, but he always hoped. But it's too late now, it's all gone so wrong that Val doesn't think they could ever fix it."

Summary
Through the lonely nights in the trailer that feels more like a mausoleum, and the house that forever feels empty and cavernous, he has found every sore spot and poked them a hundred times over. He has turned over every little mistake and failing, every time he has fallen short, and then ran through them again like TV re-runs. He can't remember if there was ever an Earl Bassett that was worth anything. Knows for certain that there was never an Earl Bassett that could have deserved Valentine McKee.

Summary
He's confused when Robby leads him all the way to the locker room, he's confused when Robby walks straight past his locker—then Dennis's locker—then all the way back to the spare bank of lockers that no one but the travel nurses use, and he's confused when Robby opens one of them to pull out a huge box, gift-wrapped in shiny blue paper.
Robby holds out the box. "Merry Christmas, Dennis," he says quietly.
It's Dennis's third Christmas alone, except he doesn't feel so alone anymore. He doesn't have his family, but he has Trinity.
He might also have Robby. He still can't figure that one out.

Summary
In 2008, Shane Hollander lost to Ilya Rozanov. Fresh-faced, hungry. Like he’d been living off victory points that were scraps compared to the real thing, compared to beating Rozanov, the first man in the world to make him feel second-best. Back then, he’d thought that was the only thing he felt, too. That the electric pulse jostling between them in the gym some time later was a trick of the mind. It was like seeing sky above for the first time. See you at the draft. Life in that paper body.
or: Ilya comes back. This is the crux of it.

Summary
It's not something that they ever talk about. They don't need to acknowledge it, and no one else ever needs to know. Or, no one else needs to know until suddenly Shane is in the hospital and no one will let Ilya see him.
(Ilya and Shane are soulmates. It doesn't change everything, but it changes enough.)

Summary
Shane Hollander, first-round draft pick of 2009, captain of the legendary Montreal Metros, is twenty-seven years old and has never won the Stanley Cup; it's starting to seem like maybe he never will. It's time Shane started thinking about a second act that will change his post-retirement narrative and give him the one thing he can't bring himself to contemplate: a life without hockey.
Enter ABC's The Bachelor. Shane's mom and his agent seem to think this reality show might be the ticket for him to reinvent himself in the public eye. All he needs to do is be charismatic, flirtatious, and witty... in front of a camera... and thirty girls desperate enough to overlook the fact that Shane himself couldn't be less interested in marrying any of them.
Thank goodness for producer Ilya Rozanov, who's taken a weirdly personal interest in helping Shane out with all of this...

Summary
He only realizes he’s doing it when it’s too late to stop.
He’s standing in the drink aisle of the grocery store, checking the expiration dates on the cans of Coke, mentally cross-checking them with Boston’s away game schedule, and the reality hits him like someone shook one of those cans and popped it open. A snap. A fizz. A mess.
Shane is making space for Ilya.
