Summary
In the heart of this faux ocean, there is a stain of crimson. It is not too near from the shore, but it's close enough for Simon to see with one eye. The viscosity is familiar. Something that he has breathed in, something that has suckled on him to the point of cannibalizing his flesh. The eel's ragged teeth are hidden underneath the surface, and yet its eyes alone are enough to make Simon's skin crawl.
“Do you…” Simon tries, breath heavy as he avoids the eel's gaze. Then, “I—” he stutters. “Nevermind.”
If Grace could see it, he would say something. No human being would bask at such a monstrosity without a flinch. Unless Simon's miscalculating, unless there's something crucial about Grace he's missed, he's certain Grace perceives nothing but blue waves.
Or, a look into the foreplay between hope and hopelessness, of being alive and tempering with death.
