Ilya begins to recognize the ugly feeling that has been bubbling in his gut for what it is—jealousy.
Why the hell is Cliff the one getting uninterrupted Shane time in his home? They hardly know each other!
Shane has never even been to Ilya’s home. And they’ve been fucking for years!
If anyone should be taking care of Shane while he’s stuck in Boston with a scrambled head and a busted knee, it should be Ilya. If anyone should be making him soup and tucking him into bed, it should be Ilya. If anyone should be drawing him a bath and massaging his feet, it should be Ilya. Wait, no, that last one’s a little weird. But the point stands!
what if shane gets hit by cliff earlier in the story at a boston game? what if the injury is just a little bit worse, making shane unable to fly home for a short while? what if cliff is a sweetie who feels so bad about getting shane injured that he asks shane to stay with him while his concussed ass with a busted knee can't go home yet? what if they become friends along the way?
and what if ilya is fuming in the corner the entire time?

Shane’s face briefly flashed with concern and confusion when he met Ilya’s gaze, clearly unsure why Ilya was staring at him like Shane was easy, wounded prey.

His mom was on him immediately about the summer schedule—photoshoots in Toronto, sponsor appearances, youth camps, PR events for the Voyagers. The team was calling about post-season press. Everyone wanted a piece of Shane Hollander, the perfect golden boy, the disciplined athlete who always said the right thing and smiled for the cameras.
Standing in his apartment, watching his screen light up over and over, Shane snapped. He didn't understand why he was hyperventilating or why he felt like he was losing his mind, but he knew with certainty that if he let his mom or the team control him for one more second, he was going to shatter into pieces.
He didn't explain himself, nor did he answer a single text.
Shane tapped into his settings, pulled up his contacts, and went down the line blocking everyone. His mom. His agent. The Voyagers' PR manager. Ilya. He booked a flight to Kansai, packed three shirts and his passport into a bag, and left his phone face down on the kitchen counter. He was getting on a plane to Kyoto for one reason: to figure out what the fuck was wrong with him.
