They say the proud king Odin of Caerleon angered the gods, and as punishment, his wife was made to lust over a druid: a wily, cunning man, with tricks up his sleeve and wild magic in heart. They say the queen's daughter by the man was born a monster: half-beast, half-girl. She was a girl—simple, intelligent, soft-spoken and fair—during daylight, but became a beast—mindless, sharp-clawed and fanged—as soon as the sun set. A winged, bloodthirsty Bastet.
The disloyal mother was slaughtered by her monstrous daughter, and the king, sick with rage and grief, built a labyrinth beneath the city to contain the beast-girl until he could find someone capable of culling her. Or so they say.
And now here Morgana is, having impersonated one of the hardworking peasant girls chosen to be fed to the Bastet this cycle. Whatever shape the truth takes: she is strong, she is cunning, and she will be leaving this island alive.

There is a way Shane has described it before: like he gets swallowed up by how good he feels, everything outside his body falling away; like his head is full of smoke. Mostly, he has said, he only gets like this with Ilya. But he looks it now. His eyes are screwed shut, his mouth hanging open, not even trying to muffle the sounds that punch their way out of him—little moans, gasps, and harsh, husky pants as he grinds down against a pillow.
Ilya’s text announcing his return had gone unread. This must be why.

“I fell through the ice, one time,” Ilya murmured, “Skating on a lake. Playing hockey.”
”Oh, shit. Really?”
”Mhm.” Ilya nodded. He had never spoken about this to anyone. Ever. “It was maybe a few months after my mother died. Skating outside was very normal in the winter.”
”Pond hockey,” Shane said, and Ilya could feel him smiling softly against his chest. He imagined a teeny tiny Shane in his teeny tiny hockey gear, skating out onto a big Canadian lake. No wonder he grew up to be such a hockey machine.
“Yes. Exactly. Coach thought the ice was thick enough, but…”
But it wasn’t goes unsaid. He’d never spoken about this to anyone because frankly, he was embarrassed. Not for falling in, but for still being so fucking affected by it. Of course, it was terrifying at the time. What kind of twelve year old is equipped for that?
