Жан не считал себя благородным рыцарем на белом коне, точно не был безвозмездным спасителем и тем более богатым простаком с золотой ложкой в заднице. Он был ведьмаком. Так вышло, что именно ведьмаки со своей природной склонностью к нейтралитету вынуждены этот самый нейтралитет всячески нарушать, принимая не самые разумные решения и занимая довольно сомнительные стороны. Что, конечно же, никогда не приводит к хорошим последствиям.
Другими словами: Жан волей случая спасает от нападения бандитов эльфийского колдуна по имени Трант. Тот пахнет гарью, не использует магию и задаёт больше вопросов, чем даёт ответов. Вскоре эльф оказывается не совсем эльфом, бандиты не совсем бандитами, гарь не совсем гарью, а Жан всё также оказывается ведьмаком, втянутым во что-то слишком большое, чтобы теперь это можно было так просто отпустить.

Adults never ask each other the obvious things. The snow is white, the water is wet, the construction in the pit will probably never end, and having been born with wings, you can fly. Of course, everything has its own nuances: snow can turn yellow, the water dries up, the pit is backfilled, and a cold prevents flying. But it's pretty simple, right? Otherwise, why does anyone need such bulky piles of feathers on their back?
Trant’s wings cast muted golden shades, from delicate beige on the down to noble metallic on the flight feathers when sunlight lights them up. Undeniably beautiful and mesmerizing, they are completely, desperately useless.

Olruggio never made a big deal about the money his specialized commissions got him. They got what they needed, and some extra at that. To the others, however, it is quite a revelation.

Summary
Qifrey didn't give off the impression that he was physically strong. On the contrary, he looked like a frail ice prince—a character in those fairy tales Olruggio had read about when he was young.
Or, Olruggio struggles to come to terms with Qifrey's not-so-hidden strength. In the process of it, he uncovers a rather concerning truth about himself.
