A-Yuan blinks up at him with big eyes. "If I make a mistake, will I get marks like yours?"
A wave of revulsion at the idea flows through Lan Wangji, followed by rage. He will never allow that to happen, for someone to misunderstand a-Yuan like that, to hurt him purposefully. "You should not be hurt for mistakes."
Tilting his head to the side, a-Yuan asks, "Then why were you?"
"Because I did not have anyone to protect me," he finally decides on saying. "But you do. I will protect you."
OR:
Lan Wangji cannot imagine allowing the Lan to punish his son the way he was punished, so he takes a-Yuan to his uncle Jiang Cheng, instead.

I lived with this hunger long before the Hail Mary. This is nothing new. I’m fine.
Right up until Rocky asks another question.
“When last time you touch other human person skin, question?”
Oh. Oh no. “When I… a few days after I first woke up here.”
Rocky starts to relax for a split second, but then tightens when something occurs to him.
“Grace crewmates dead when you wake up. You said this, statement. You not even know your own name, remember nothing, see dead bodies, confirm?”
I nod, because if I open my mouth I will gag.
“When last time Grace touch ALIVE human person, question.”
I swallow thickly. I don’t answer aloud because I know Rocky can hear the hitch in my breath. My stomach churns with fresh bile. He senses my vital signs tick over into stress patterns and goes very, very still again.
“Grace. When last time, question.”
I clench my jaw so hard my temples ache, and beg him with my eyes to just stop.
“Grace. Please say not when… when Evil Stratt humans put you to sleep.”
I can taste grass.

He was untethered for the first time in his life. Set adrift without the support of the only two people he had come to trust enough to allow himself to need them.
Lan Wangji thought Wei Wuxian's return to Cloud Recesses would make his life complete. Settled. Perfect. But Wei Wuxian's unexplained reluctance to accept his new home, coupled with Lan Xichen's seclusion at a time when his brother could use his guidance most, starts a destructive cycle of panic attacks that Lan Wangji doesn't understand and can't control. And if he doesn't get a grip and find his courage to ask Wei Wuxian to stay with him and be his husband soon, it might cost him his life.

There was a small scrabbling sound under the stairs. Rats, most likely. Then the sound of metal clinking against metal, which was unusual – more likely to be the harbinger of a fierce corpse. Lan Zhan readied his sword.
It was not a fierce corpse, but a sadder kind of walking dead: the skinniest dog he’d ever seen crept out from under the stairs and looked at them, hunched over and crouched down in fear, tail tucked between its legs and up against its belly.
Lan Wangji and Jiang Wanyin search for Wei Wuxian, rescue a dog, and fall in love.

"I have always wondered what it would be like to taste one of the Twin Jades of Gusu."
Xichen goes silent. Any protest he might have had, any words he might have spoken are strangled by the horror that suddenly grips his throat.

Wen Xu isn't touching Wangji, he tells himself. He hasn't even spared a glance towards his little brother.
