“Catch me if you can, Detective Hollow.”
And then he’s gone.
The wind howls between the buildings, singing a dreadful tune in the sky as it forces loose strands of hair to hit Chase’s face. Officers from behind him are all talking, and it dissolves into a garbled mesh of voices into the background.
All Chase can do is stare at the spot where Buddy disappeared, the empty skyline where he humiliated Chase with just a simple gesture of his hands. A slow, reluctant grin pulls at his mouth.
Fuck, he thinks, that was so cool.
Or: Detective Chase Hollow is finally assigned the case he's been waiting for: Elusive thieves that the police are struggling to catch, finally giving in and asking for his help. Unfortunately, it's a little difficult to focus on your job as a detective when you end up falling in love with the man you're supposed to arrest.

The moment you realize that you're currently happy—consciously trying to savor the feeling—which prompts your intellect to identify it, pick it apart and put it in context, where it will slowly dissolve until it's little more than an aftertaste.
She laughs, and it carries none of the mirth present in the air, “Ah, you can try to hide your thoughts, but it won’t work—” she stares right at his face, an unwavering gaze with the side of her head resting upon her arms, “—the eyes speak what the mouth cannot.”
When he says nothing in response, she continues, “The eyes are a special thing, my dear. The voice can deceive, the eyes cannot—they bear witness to each unspoken truth, to all that yearns to be acknowledged,” she pauses, looking at him with an intensity that prickles across his skin, licking her lips, “In yours, I see want, want for those you mimic and—”
Albedo falters. He always does, with her, and this time, that failure is brought upon him when he looks away.
“-isn’t it cruel? To want so hopelessly, and be confined to just that?”

He pauses, as if he needs to think over the words carefully.
“—We don’t need to talk about what happened, because nothing happened.”
Chase stares breathlessly, each word a slap on his skin, an ache that nestles itself deep. Nothing happened. Buddy says it so matter-of-fact, like he’s decided on a truth that Chase has no say in. The hurt turns sharp, the thorns pricking his blood until it quells into a pointed rage, clawing its way up Chase’s throat.
“You kissed me, Buddy,” Chase whispers, but it lands like a slap, from how Buddy’s eyes, so blue and dark, widen.
Buddy looks away, refusing to make eye contact, “We were in dire circumstances.”
“You— why are you—,” Chase sputters, desperate to try and make sense of it. Sense of how Buddy could kiss him so gently, hands holding him like he was a delicate thing, ask to be his hero and then suddenly act like it meant nothing. He clenches his fists, fingernails leaving marks in his palms.
“You kissed me like—Like you wanted to.”
Or: Chase fumbles his way through asking Buddy to watch the fireworks with him. Nothing more, nothing less. Somehow, Buddy agrees.

Everyone had colors. Everyone. Not the flat, forgettable kind like the plain smear of yellow, or dull wash of blue, but something richer, something vibrant and all-consuming. Shades that bled into one another, dark purples bruising into deep reds, soft saffron melting at the edges and giving away to a fluttering orange. Colors that gleamed, that shifted, that curled and bloomed like the coiling smoke of a cigarette in the early sunrise. Bursting at the seams and trembling with life, with feeling.
And, Geto thought, if you were a color, you’d be a kaleidoscope of them all.

Summary
Typically, Chase and Buddy butt heads more often than not, but lately, they've had more good days than bad, threats have devolved into banter and playful jabs, and concern for Buddy's living conditions have taken up more and more space within Chase's thoughts. Now set on the decision to rescue Buddy from Ex Libris, Chase must figure out a way to convince Buddy that he can and deserves to be saved, but the chasm of distance between them is wider than he originally anticipated. Eventual happy end, but, geez, the Don Bluth-esque obstacles we gotta go through.
Rated for Teen And Up Audiences for select cursing and later descriptions of a spooky environment.
Time Pocket AU: Cinderella Boy but everything is the same except I've tweaked the definition of how time moves when in and out of stories.
