“What’s he saying?” Holland asks in the distance.
“He said to turn the TV on,” Jackson tells him, voice a little further, holding the phone away from himself. He sounds close again when he asks Colt, “Why?”
“What channel?” Holland asks.
“What chan—” Jackson starts to relay, before he cuts himself off. “What? Holland, what—”
Colt’s Dad says something indistinguishable, too far away for him to hear. Moments of silence follow where Colt knows they’re watching the same thing he is, seeing his brother’s face— their son’s face— Ryland’s face framed on the television, just above the words Hail Mary, and save our sun, and suicide mission.
or: ryland has been missing for a couple of weeks when colt sees the hail mary launch on tv. the first thing he thinks to do is call his family.

Eva meets him head-on. “Ryland was a good man. He will be in good company on the Hail Mary.” There’s an impossible weight to her voice when she adds, “Thank you for him. You should be proud.”
Colt tightens his grip on Holly’s hand, pushes his face into her shoulder. He has no idea what to say to that; it doesn’t sound like anybody does, the silence ringing around them as the words linger so heavily, he thinks he could choke.
