Summary
When Dumbledore dies going after a cursed ring at the end of Potter's 4th year, the Order is left without a leader - an idol - a symbol of hope and unity. In their infinite wisdom, they decide only Harry Potter - the Boy-Who-Lived - can fill this gap, and he becomes the de facto leader of the Order at fifteen years old.
Faced with the Order's weakened chances without Dumbledore and the sudden ascension of a boy he has spent years despising - the son of his childhood tormentor - Severus Snape must decide whether he can face returning to this new Order at all.

The morning after Harry witnesses Snape's worst memory during their disastrous Occlumency lesson, Severus receives a letter from Potter over breakfast. Expecting Dumbledore's words in the boy's handwriting, begging him to resume the lessons, he instead finds something he never could have anticipated.

“I want to kill myself.”
Harry had burst into Snape’s office without permission, without a soul knowing where he was. He sat once again without permission as the words left his mouth, causing Snape to slowly lift his head, eyes widening slightly to show an emotion Harry had never seen on the man before: shock.
Snape lowered his quill and opened his mouth to speak, but Harry interrupted him. “I know you hate me, and you’re probably more surprised I’m coming to you rather than surprised over the fact I’m not going to literally anyone else, but you won’t coddle me, and I don’t need coddling.”
