Summary
In an alternate universe, the taumoeba didn't become immune to xenonite. Ryland Grace returns to Earth, and Rocky to Erid. Grace finds it difficult to re-adjust to a life on a planet he doesn't recognize, filled with people who have already grieved his passing. And it doesn't help that his internal dialogue has manifested itself as his alien best friend, who he will never see again.

Summary
Sleeping is so much easier with Rocky around. Well… maybe not necessarily easier, but… better?
Before I met Rocky, I mostly just felt too awful all the time to get much rest. And after we parted ways, the nightmares that had been taunting me on and off started coming with a vengeance. The nightmares aren't gone now, of course. But it's better.

"You're acting weird today."
Rocky exhales a puff of air from his radiator the way a human would. He wonders when certain habits became second nature to him, like tilting his carapace and bobbing it up and down as though nodding, and he wonders, too, whether the time spent with Grace hasn't changed them both beyond repair, until they've become almost strangers to their own species. No longer Eridian, no longer human, but simply Rocky and Grace.

Let it not be said that Adrian was not devoted as well. They had stood firm, a loyal widower longer than others could fathom. Once you encountered a love like Rocky’s, there could be no replacement. Nothing could even compare.
‘Do you understand that?’ Adrian wanted to ask. So desperately, they wanted the alien’s reply. ‘Are you the only other creature in the universe who understands what it is like to be loved by someone so completely?’

Adrian meets Grace several times, before Grace is healthy enough to meet them in return. Despite light-years of distance between their species, Adrian might have finally met the first other being who appreciates Rocky like they do; or so they hope.
