“I thought birthdays were supposed to be exciting.” Mira said gently. “You’ve always loved your birthday.”
“I usually do.” Rumi replied with a faint, almost apologetic smile. “This one just means…” She hesitated, her gaze drifting back out over the meadow. “I’ve got one year.”
Mira frowned slightly, about to ask what she meant, before the princess automatically explained.
“One year until the tournament.”

Mira had always known that loving a princess was an impossible dream for a stablehand. She had no title, no wealth, and no place beside Rumi when the kingdom would come to claim her future. But who would she be to stand by when the woman she loved needed her?
Princess Rumi had spent her entire life dreading the tradition that would decide her future: on her twentieth birthday, the kingdom would compete for her hand in marriage—and the crown that came with it. Unfortunately for them, Rumi had never cared much for the idea of being won like a prize. Especially when her heart already belonged to someone who could never hope to claim it.
That was, of course, until a stranger in red armor stepped foot into the arena.

Laughing, Mira teases, “Know many wine critics, do you?”
“I know a few!”
“Well, if you happen to know any willing to visit and review, by all means, please tell them to come.” Mira angles her head, smiling. “But in the meantime, your glowing review is plenty.”
Rumi blinks, then flushes, bringing the glass back to her lips and looking away, casting her eyes towards the setting sun painting the vineyard in brilliant, flaming hues. “I’m glad you think so,” she mutters, shoulders hunched.
“Of course.” Mira can’t tear her gaze away for some reason, taking advantage of Rumi’s attention being elsewhere to admire the way the orange of sunset strokes her skin, highlighting the contours of her face and the bold purple of her hair.
She looks perfect, really. As beautiful as the Italian countryside around them.
Or: When vineyard owner Mira takes on a guest in her Italian villa for the next month, the last thing she expects is Rumi: beautiful, bold, and the first person to truly match Mira's passion for her craft. What starts as a simple stay soon grows into a guided tour around the local countryside and perhaps, over a shared bottle of wine, even more.
