Summary
”They smiled at each other, bound together in that moment by the responsibility that neither of them wanted and that one of them still might escape.”
Since his mother’s death Maia has never had a friend. When he arrives at the palace he feels his isolation keenly. He gradually finds ways to make connections, and to find people who are willing to support him. Eventually he begins to make allies at the court and to realise that friendship is not necessarily impossible.
Idra has just lost his father and finds himself thrust abruptly into the role of Prince of the Untheileneise Court. He is naturally wary of the new emperor, especially when he finds himself in danger because of his mother’s treason. Slowly he comes to sympathise with Maia.
