He likes when his voice gets like this, when he talks to Scar like he’s a human despite not knowing he can understand every word he says, when he treats their one-sided conversations as actual conversations, even if the language isn't there.
‘My best friend left me’, he says. ‘He’s trying to find our family. Or get rich. I don’t know, whichever comes first, I guess. And you and Mumbo are my only friends. But I can't talk to you! And I did it to myself! It's all just so...' He forgets the word for ‘annoying’ in dolphin, so he trails off. ‘Annoying’ isn’t even the right word. It hurts. It's killing him.

It doesn’t sound completely terrible, and Tommy trusts Wilbur. He's never led Tommy wrong before (with the exception of the jellybean fiasco at the fair, which Tommy will not be forgiving). But Wilbur’s family isn’t Wilbur. Who knows if Tommy can trust them? What if they take one look at his collar and ship him back to his owners? It’s what a responsible adult would do.
Tommy hates responsible adults.
Tommy, a feral werewolf pup, is adopted by a pack; this goes against all of his best laid plans.

Summary
Deep in a forest, there is a small pack of humans who all stay away from hikers. However, eventually one of them is found injured, half dead, in the middle of the path. The human child with wild gold hair and razor sharp blue eyes is brought to the closest zoo by animal control to be treated. As the juvenile heals, it brings more attention to the zoo, and more knowledge is gained about humans.
That doesn't mean that said human is particularly pleased about it.

Tommy glared at Lethal, scowl deepening, “i’d-” a coughing fit interrupts his words, pulling on his wound as he winces, “i’d rather myself be dead, then a hundred others,” he spits, self preservation lost to anger.
Lethal’s unwavering stare softens, “oh, you poor little thing, they got you thinkin’ like a hero, huh?” he laughs softly, almost— fond?
“I am a hero!” he argues, leaning forward, pulling on his wound again, he winces, taking a deep breath before slumping down, “i am a hero,” he repeats, quieter.
“You’re a kid,” Lethal ignores the way his head snaps to meet the supervillains, “you’re a kid, Cardinal,” he murmurs, resting a hand on Cardinals cheek.
“I- i’m not, i’m a hero- i’m a hero!”

If he could, if he was old enough, Tommy would have snarled at that. Mother is the one always telling him to be clear about what he wants. Why isn’t she answering? Where’s the warble? The croon? The low crackle of sparking tinder in the back of her throat, threatening comfort?
His instincts buzz stronger in response, smothering whatever anger is trying to bubble in his gut. Wrong, they whisper. Something is wrong.

Tommy was miles from home, bloody and panting, stumbling through the dirty streets as he did his best to cover his tracks. There was no doubt in his mind that Dream would be after him, and this time, he wouldn’t take so long to kill him.
Tommy couldn’t do this anymore. He wished the heroes had killed him the moment they first caught him. Even now, having escaped, he wanted to die. He just didn’t want to be alone as he did it.
But he had nothing and no one. He was alone.
His exhausted mind drifted to the only people he deemed important enough to want to be close to.
He wanted to die. Siren, the Blade, and the Angel of Death wanted to kill him. It was a match made in heaven.
