Soft footsteps come up to the bed and Bobby is expecting to see a pair of crocs or other comfortable shoes out of the corner of his eye. Another nurse coming to take vitals only to tell him there’s no change. But he’s wrong. A soft pair of ballet flats slide into view, and there’s someone settling in the empty chair beside him. For the first time in what feels like hours, he looks away from the bed and his rosary, and finds Maddie beside him, her kind eyes, so like Buck’s, even if they’re different colours, watching him.
“You should go home, Bobby. You’ve been here for hours."

Post-lightning strike, while watching over a comatose Buck, Bobby and Maddie have an important conversation.

Rather than give him the joint, Ilya takes it back between his own lips and sucks in a deep breath, the tip glowing as he does so. Then, before Shane can process it, he’s reaching up and sliding one large hand around the back of Shane’s neck, pulling him down so their lips meet.
Shane gasps softly, and Ilya takes the opportunity to blow smoke into his open and waiting mouth.

Honeybees communicate by dancing. Works for them, lets them figure out where good flowers are. Ants do it with smells, little chemical trails on the ground to get back to food source. There’s a monkey that screams different for leopards than eagles – different sound for different predator.
People, though. People have too many words, too many languages, and Ilya is very, very tired.
