Half of Wen Kexing’s back can be seen from the open sliding door, white hair tied into a knot at the base of his neck. He sings along to soft music Zhou Zishu's never heard before. His arms move with practiced motions, confident that whatever they produce will be good. Zhou Zishu kind of wants to go up behind him and get on his tippy-toes, watch his expert hands grasp pot handles. Touch the finer hairs behind his ear with his nose, and hear him laugh in delight.
Instead, Zhou Zishu rubs at his temples and wonders when it got so bad, how it got so bad this quickly.

Summary
The sun has begun to set by the time Wen Kexing arrives; the once cool white of the room’s walls is now emblazoned in a searing amber glow, and Zhou Zishu’s pale face looks all the more gaunt for it. When Wen Kexing enters she can’t help but flinch at the sight, hurrying over to where Chengling watches her guardian sleep, worrying at her lower lip.
