“Good, well then that brings me to the real topic of conversation.” Another sigh from Coach Wiebe, “As I’m sure you’ve already guessed, those highlighted names have been offered rookie contracts and they’ve each expressed interest in living with a vet for their first year.”
Ilya felt his heart fall into his stomach, afraid of the next words to come out of his Coach’s mouth.
“We asked the rookies who they’d like to live with and, well, LaPointe wanted to board with you, Chouinard. And Young with you, Bood,” Wiebe then turned to Ilya who had frozen on the spot, “And Roz, Haas wants to live with you.”
Bood and Chouinard chuckled as they watched Ilya’s eyes widen in horror.

Luca Haas was drafted 2nd overall by the Ottawa Centaurs in 2018. Two years later, he anxiously moved halfway across the world to play his rookie season with the team. He requested to live with Ilya Rozanov and they slowly became family.

Summary
Luca Haas moves in with Ilya Rozanov for his rookie year and slowly gets adopted by Hollanov. Not even three months into their arrangement, Luca gets injured in a game against the Voyageurs. Shane is there to pick up the pieces while Ilya is busy fighting the guy that did it.
This is a one shot that was requested by a commenter (ohshereallydidthat) on my main fic, "Growing Outward." They wanted a Shane POV of the incident in Chapter 15 so here we are! Could also be read as a standalone.

This is a one shot from my larger fic, "Growing Outward", which is basically book 7 of the Game Changers series if it was about Luca Haas. In that fic, Luca moves in with Ilya for his rookie year and slowly gets adopted by Hollanov. He also starts to develop a crush on fellow rookie, Eric Young. Some people wanted some scenes from Eric's perspective, so here we are!
This scene is briefly alluded to in Chapter 13: Navigating of "Growing Outward" from Ilya's perspective, but this can be also read as a cute stand-alone fic if you really wanted to.

The room started to fill with similarly-disbelieving chatter, but Shane was only half listening. They’d won the game, sure, but his mind was still on the goal he should’ve made in the third period. He was running through the play in his head carefully, repeatedly, unlacing his skates slowly as he watched it unfold in his head. He’d been running plays a lot the last few days, trying not to think about Ilya’s face when he told him to go home, Hollander.
“Their plane fucking crashed?”
The words cut through Shane’s thoughts like a knife. A plane crash? That wasn’t real. That kind of thing didn’t actually happen.
He heard his own voice before he even thought to say anything, before his brain even caught up to why his pulse had sped up so quickly. “Whose plane?”
OR
If the crash was a little bit worse, and there's no way to know anything - no news, no way to call. Is there really a choice to be made?
