If the Games and opponents don’t kill him, the prince he’s fighting feelings for certainly will if he discovers what he is—completely Mortal.

And just like that the wind is knocked out of Dabi's lungs. His lax, dangerous facade crumbles away as he chokes and sputters.
"No, no. I-I'm not—there's no way. You've got the wrong guy!" He raises his hands trying to reason with the child as if the toddler would somehow understand, go "sorry for the misunderstanding," and toddle away in search of their real father.

Dabi doesn't think he's asking for a lot in life. Just to be able to plan and successfully carry out the getback of the century on his family is all he wants. Unfortunately, a monkey wrench in the shape of a toddler is thrown into his plans at ass o'clock in the morning.

The legend of Sisyphus tells of a King that once tricked Death and kept him captive for about a month before Olympus wisened up and cleaned up the situation. That man was sentenced to an eternity of toil for his crimes, and he's already been dead for an era by the time Zagreus comes through to meet him. The wounds are so old that even Thanatos seems more annoyed by the event than anything.
This is an AU that asks: what if the events of the game predated Sisyphus, and Zagreus was alive to see it?

Sisyphus knew he would never suffer enough for all the sins he had committed in his mortal life, but that wasn't the point anyway. The point was to keep cutting his hands on Bouldy as he fruitlessly shoved him to the non-existant top, to keep cutting his back against the Furies' whips, and to keep cutting his own self-worth down with his thoughts.
It would all just be a lot less unnerving if Death didn't hover around staring at him as he did it.

Summary
What if Rayla was right, and killing Ezran couldn't have freed the assassins because they were bound to avenge a death that hadn't yet happened? Runaan wavers in his convictions and gathers the other assassins to her cause. He will have to learn to let Rayla forge her own path, as she will learn to step out of the shadows cast by all of her parents. These human princes show a level of honor and respect to the elves that the assassins are unused to, and both sides must question everything they were taught.
Note: major character death is in reference to King Harrow, who is not actually dead, but everyone in the story will believe that he is and it's narrated as such, so it's getting the warning anyways. No one else is going to die I promise.

Ares scoops the smaller god out of the box and cradles him in his arms. "All will soon be well," Ares murmurs soothingly. "The king is lying in a pool of his own blood, deeply regretting his life choices. I ensured that his coming death could not be considered peaceful."
Thanatos remains still, bound by the chains. The only indication that he can even hear Ares is the slight relief that shows through his eyes at Ares's words.
"I cannot free you from these chains myself, but I know who can."
