Ethan heard the telltale flutter of rustling feathers, turning his attention to the front of the cathedral.
There Mother Miranda stood, regarding her children with a wooden stare. How anyone could believe that she was capable of love was beyond him. Her gaze felt cold as it swept over them, calculating how each of them could be of use, her beloved ‘children’ merely pawns in her schemes. Miranda measured their worth via their individual power level, which explained why Ethan had been the unequivocal favorite for the past thirty years.
He vaguely remembered his life before Mother Miranda’s intervention. It began with various atrocious experiments, the woman taking away everything he had known and having the gall to call it a gift. Miranda had turned him into a monster, had stripped away everything that had made him human until nothing but rot and decay remained.
